the romance being between perseus and achilles which i was told did not happen in the iliad, correct me if i'm wrong, but it was just hollywood. however, i LOVED troy. the cast was a bunch of pretty boys but it was very very good. brad pitt was incredible as was orlando bloom. i didn't know whether to be put off or amused when they condensed the war from 10 years to ending right on the 12th day of hector's funeral celebration. lovely movie. what i was really pleased with was that they stayed true to the iliad as being an anti-war war story. rehearsal time, more later........

In the imortal words of the ex-SNL cast member Jimmy Phalon, it will make every man a huge homer..... fan. A fan of the great Greek storyteller, Homer.
I thought it was pretty good too.
Orlando Bloom, I'm not a huge fan of.
Brad Pit did well, though. He's a good actor.
The fella who played the King of Troy... he didn't impress me very much. He didn't do a very good job of being miserable when he lost his kingdom.
The soundtrack was awesome! bada bada bada bada bada aaaaaeee aaaaee aaaaaa :P

Yes, I enjoyed it...good movie. And no, Briseis (The way its spelled I believe...but it sounds like perseus) was not in the Iliad. It was pretty true to the story...I enjoyed it except they didn't include many of the god's, who had a big role in the battle of Troy in the Iliad. I love it when they stay true to the story...

Well the guy who played the King of Troy didn't he play as Lawrence of Arabia when he was younger?, eh? Most of the critics have yawned at the movie Troy so I didn't go see it.

The movie was a bit overly histrionic and pompous, considering that it wasn't [i]that[/u] good. But it wasn't bad, either. It was good, just not as good as it was made out to be.

Indeedy, the best thing about the picture was the menacing tunes and Pitt running around with a Marvin the Martian hat on, Helen wasn't all that. The horsey was cool..
Troy has to be one of the most disgusting films ever made. How can you possibly spend that much on a film and not feel guilty about it?

guilty about what?
personally i thought the movie was ok not as good as my favorite greek mythology film of all time Clash of the Titans but ok. Brad Pitt was miscast the only reason he was in there was for sex appeal that had to be the most of Brad Pitt I have seen since seeing his cock in Fight Club and I am really tired of seeing Orlando Bloom in every single moviel.

yeah, king priam is peter o'toole.
and i can't believe you guys are saying brad pitt was just in there for sex appeal. you're just jealous. not that he doesn't lend a huge amount of sex appeal to the film but brad pitt is an extremely talented actor. and if he's sexy it's not because he plays sexy but he just is. helen was hot but she had nothing over hector's wife who was absolutely lovely. and even prettier was achilles' girlfriend.
I saw it sunday night. It was really good. I really liked Hector, and his wife. Brad Pitt did a good job. I've read that Brad Pitt is pro-war and his wife is anti-war (in regards to Iraq).
I've also read that they both are part of a group of several hollywood stars trying to bring peace to the middle east

I haven't seen it yet, though I do intend to go and see it, it looked rather impressive.
Though I have noticed people call brad pitt a pretty boy!
Come on guys, he's clearly not, maybe he's a bit on the "pretty" side, and was made by a Jeens advert, but to be fair to him, he's been really good in a fair few films. Fight club, that was excelent, Snatch another fine example.
He's also been in some other stuff like, 7 years in Tibet, which wasn't that bad.
I think he gets a lot of flak rather unfairly.

Troy is awesome, even my hatred for the poncey Orlando was put aside through his very good performance in it.
Pitt also had another stonker of a film, he really is a great actor and get far too much stick for being good looking.
Eric Bana as Hector was easily the star of the film, what a great performance! The fight scence between him and Achilles was damn near awesome!
Best looker is clearly Achilles lass, she was damn sexy! PHWOAR

yeah, the fight scene was amazing. i liked the parts where achilles sort of jumped up and hit really hard as he came down. and then when he jabbed from under against hector's sword and there was that frame of him in that lunging position holding his short blade out in front of him. it just gave an impression of incredible impulsion.

I saw it last weekend and while I was entertained, I wasn't all that impressed, really. I must admit that the huge number of people employed in the battle scenes was awesome but I really didn't get as much out of these scenes as I expected...I really don't think they did enough large-scale shots.
The score was horrendous...it almost ruined the movie for me!
If I hear one more comment about Brad Pitt looking hot in this film, I'm going to vomit. Is this really an acceptable standard of beauty? How sick is it to base the ideal man on the image of one who works out all day, every day for several months? Literally, that's how he got that muscular, folks! Ugh...when men drool over ridiculously skinny and toned models they get called pigs with fascist beauty standards. I think Pitt's body is even more insulting! The only justification is that he's playing the mightiest warrior ever...and maybe I'm just jealous.
Dr. Rosenpenis

I think that huge fight scene sucked ass. There was only, which was a huge mistake, and it just looked like a bunch of men literally jumping on top of each other. No side seemed to advance upon the other, but both just continued marching up and falling down in the middle in a huge pile where they just seemed to have fallen, and not even been stricken down at all at times.

Where was Hecuba? Fuck no throwing of Hector's baby from the walls
Casandra willingly!!!!!!!!!!
having sex with Achilles, what the fuck is this shit.
They spent more time worrying in the script about the death of Brad Pitt's cousin, which was about all it amounted to
Than to the sacking of Troy, the rape and enslavement of all it's women, the killing of all it's babies and children and the killing of all the men
SELLOUT CITY BABY
For all those who don't know the play THE TROJAN WOMEN is done during times of war to reason with those in power about the horrors of war.
When this war kicked off it was done simultaneously in every city nearly on the globe in the West and some in the East.
This most likely was the reasoning ENTIRELY for doing Troy, but there was no reason to do it as all the reasons that the Trojan Women is done were removed from the movie.
Instead of showing just how ruined the city is at the end and how everyone is killed or enslaved they focused on Brad Pitts funeral.
Freaking ridiculous, Hecuba would have had a few words with the producers.

Antieverything, whatever you say, Brad Pitt will always be a pretty boy. Even my boyfriend is attuned enough to his feminine side to admire the beauty that is Brad Pitt by telling me that he is the only man he would allow me to go out with.
Question, why is Orlando Bloom in every movie where there is war and a lot of people being killed. e.g. Black Hawk Down, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, and most recently Troy
Well, the movie may not have been entirely faithful to the original story made by Homer but it was a bit good. About what Pandora was saying, the movie wasn't able to show the enslavement of women and the killing of the men and the babies because the movie ended just there. It did not focus on that but on Achilles' death which I think what the movie really is all about hence the title should have been just Achilles.
Yes the movie was histrionic. Yes it was testosteronic but what is important is that it was able to convey Homer's message-- his being anti-war and the horrors brought about by war. Bush should have seen this.
Finally, Eric Bana is a god. Let us put Hulk in our repressed memory forever.

I agree, Brad Pitt is fucking gorgeous! All I said was that it isn't good for women to create an ideal for male beauty based on bodybuilder/model/actors rolled into one!
How does me criticizing unrealistic beauty standards amount to me not being in touch with my feminine side? Sheesh.

I do believe Redstar's oft quoted quote that I shall do injustice to because I cannot quite remeber it, but which goes something along the lines of "People are distracted by entertainment, who needs all that thinking crap?" ....please someone post the actual quote....how on earth did you get to be in the commie club digital nirvana, if you cannot see the apparent worth of showing an integral and horrifying but necessary part of the event?
Question, why is Orlando Bloom in every movie where there is war and a lot of people being killed. e.g. Black Hawk Down, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, and most recently Troy
ok I will get to that Question soon, but first an explaination...
Why is it that in recent times we have seen a huge boost in the numbers of 'historical-esque' films? (Gladiator, LOTR trillogy, Pirates of the Carribean, Troy etc etc...)
Postmodernism, that's why. In the postmodern world we are disconnected from all forms of continuity, thus we are completely disconnected from our history as well...so from time to time, the postmodern world gets a little nostalgic and goes on the historical SPECTACULARS.....i use this word because it is all they are, merely spectacles that serve little or no real purpose, this is extremely evident as the majority of this thread has focused on perceived and real world aesthetics (brad pitt, and the battle scene....need I say more?)
However these spectacular jaunts into a perceived history only serve to alienate us further from our real histories by supplanting them with manufactured history. Fortunately there are a few restless postmodern inhabitants here, although i don't believe they are aware of this. (I'm alluding to the concern about the deviation from the plot, the lack of representation of the aftermath left in Troy etc..)
Now onto the afforementioned question......Why Orlando Bloom? because of his aesthetic appeal which he developed in LOTR, he now has the perceived charm of some Heroic, masculine, "noble-savage" from our past, so we can get all nostalgic just by looking at him....it all adds to the overrall effect of the postmodern spectacular ....

what i was really pleased with was that they stayed true to the iliad as being an anti-war war story.
Is this a joke? If you had read the Iliad you would have noted that every second page Homer is praising "swift-footed Achilles", "god-like Hector, "quick-thinking Odysseus" and countless others for slaying the enemy. The worth of the book's characters is clearly based on the number of men they kill.

but it doesn't deny that war is tragic. it doesn't deny that they lament the loss of men. you forget that in ancient times, DEATH was a huge part of the culture and that the men were praised for bravery and battle prowess. that is how they acheived title and renown. greek life was difficult and honor was a large part of it. paris was ready to die to prove his love for helen (true, he pussied out, but he did go for it against a much larger, more experience and battle-weathered man) and hector was ready to assume responsibility for the death of achilles' disciple and fight achilles one on one. achilles was noble in never turning his back from a fight and finally conceding hector's body to priam after he'd dragged it along the cliffs. it's just how greece WAS.
there was art going on in greece but life still revolved around the gods, war, and honor. homer documented the iliad thus because in those times achilles, hector, and odysseus were who people aspired to be like, to imitate their valor.
it also depends on what versions of the iliad you read. it was originally writte in an ancient tongue and every translator has his own interpretation of what he's translating.

Two wrongs don't make a right! Seriously, there is a very well documented trend of an unrealistic standard of beauty for men coming into prominance over the last decade or two...and the negative results on male self-esteem have also been documented!
...but to be perfectly honest, I'm trying to find a pic of the guy in "troyshape" because I was pretty fucking high when I saw the movie!

Saw it a few hours ago at my local cinema.
Remarks :
Acting : generally bad. Only good performances were from Sean Bean as Odysseus and Brian Cox as Agamemnon. Brad Pitt was hollow, Orlando Bloom was a pretty-faced ponce, Peter O'Toole was far too old, and Eric Bana looked like a spastic.
Sound-track : I am surprised by the raves here. The soundtrack was simply awful. Gladiator style music with awful wailing raking my eardrums. Simply terrible, and always at the wrong moments. Completely overused and of very low quality. Crap.
Effects : Alright. Have seen better though. Ships looked a bit fake.
Fight-scenes : Entertaining, but nothing special. Seen it all before in Gladiator.
Direction : Not bad. Some shots a bit too long and pointless, like the multiple kissing parts.
Story : What can I say? It's Troy!
Stunning moments : Shoulder-kill by Achilles at the beginning. Very stylish and simple yet stunning. Hector being dragged along face down. Touching moment.
TOTAL : 6/10
Your average Hollywood action film. Entertaining, but nothing special.

It's a 7/10 for me.
The overall mood was quite impressive, and the CG in the battle scenes were well worth the ticket price, but less can be said of actors like Orlando Bloom, who from his recent films, appears to have graduated from the Keanu Reeves School of Acting.

BUT, BUT.......
In the original siege of Troy, or Iliard,
Achilias was GAY, the person who was suppositly his cousin was actually his lover (sorry to blow the sex scene fantasy's...).........
Achilias was killed by Apollo, not Orlando BLoom,
Neither the King of Grecce , or his brother died.......
The prince of Troys wife didn't escape, she became slave.......
And Helen returned to Troy and lived a happy life with her ex-husband......
Christ, the movie almost couldn't of been more proped up for a typical Hollywood movie if tried any harder!!!!!!!
