Police battle with anti-globalisation protestors
12:44pm Sunday, 17th March 2002

Riot police have fought back anti-globalisation protestors in Barcelona following a peaceful march and rally by thousands of demonstrators.

Hours earlier European leaders wrapped up their summit on economic reforms.

Police say seven officers were injured, while at least three journalists, including a photographer, were hurt. One was struck by a rubber bullet.

Dozens of people were arrested. Witnesses say some 200 protestors began smashing windows and throwing molotov cocktails and rocks at riot police.

A police spokesman said: "We will have a full report later, but officers are authorised to use the force necessary to stop people from throwing molotov cocktails at them."

In one confrontation, rioters set a dustbin on fire and turned over a car. Police detained 20 of them.

Amid fears of rioting and possible terrorist attacks, leaders of 28 EU countries met in a heavily guarded compound outside the city for the two-day summit.

City officials estimate 250,000 people participated in Saturday's march, while the organisers put the figure at half a million.

The demonstrations were called by the umbrella organisation of protest groups: the Campaign Against a Europe of Capitalism and War. Marchers belonged to diverse organisations but aimed much of their wrath at globalisation and EUs plans to liberalise energy and financial markets.

Speakers told the crowd that European leaders put business interests ahead of concern for the millions of the world's poor who die of starvation each year.

Its a shame that all we ever hear about protests is the riots, and not the message they are trying to get across.

Im still saddened by the fact a man was murdered in Italy last year, for throwing a rock at a car. I hope we can just get through this year without having people being gunned down again.

Too true Zippy, but there's also the fact that if there hadn't been any trouble the protest would hardly get a mention. It's a shame, but that seems to be the nature of todays"shock, horror"media style.

Ziggy the man was murdered because he and other hoodlems had trapped policeofficers in a burning van and had attempted to throw a can of petrol to burn them alive. The fact they shot him was to defend themselves. He isn't a martyr merely an idiot anarchist.

I don't think that all those anti- globalist demonstrations are effective enough. They can be considered as the way of social protest, but all that shit is not serious!!!
Anti- globalists are not organized enough, and that is the reason, why their actions will not change anything...
What do we need? WE NEED CHANGE.
WHEN DO WE NEED IT? I don't think that NOW.
Masses have to be organized well, and that takes time.
Anti- globalists make bad image to all serious leftists, they are all men who want adventures, fighting fucking cops. Well, sometimes cops beat them, but I think anti-globalists like it, because they continue their movement.

There is no way to bring something serious on, by the actions, which are not serious.
