i made a post in websites but i thought to make one here as well. After G8 2004 they will presumably make public where they are going to hold it. They will probably go to some remote scottish or channel island but they may not. I doubt they want another Genoa but that will still leave plenty of time, so we can still have some effect wherever they are.
On this website you can find out loads and organize with people on the forum. Most of the people on the forums were at Dublin mayday 2004.

Unfortunalty the anti-corporate/anti capitalist movement that sprung up after the battle of Seattle in Dec. 1999 has become more or less invisible now as the news media have shifted their attention to other topics like Iraq and 'terrorism'.

Also the anti-capitalist movement has lost a lot of it's militancy over the years and for the time being I don't think we will see another Seattle, Gothenburg, London 2000/2001 or Genoa protests.

It is a real shame as the anti-capitalist movement was very promising as it was organised by PEOPLE at grassroots level and was vibrant in the differing leftist ideologies it had whilst being radical in it's overall platform.

Now the movement has seen the dogmatic Marxist/Stalinist/Trotskyite grouplets move in and take over the movement for their own ends of recriuting people to their own bickering organisations. The whole point of the movement was that it was a new style of leftist politics which favoured grassroots movements over autorcatic top-down organisations and now these grouplets have hijacked the show has put a lot of people off.

Globalise Resistance UK is a front for the SWP and the London European Social Forum is being used by the SWP in conjuction with the Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone, hardly a good way to get people who have had enough of professional politicans and parties involved!

It seems the naming of gleneagles as the location of the 2005 summit it now merely a formality.

In Saturdays local press in Edinburgh, a front page article told of a memo circulated around the Lothian and Borders police force warning that all holiday leave between the first and 14th of July was to be put on hold.

Clearly they realise the possibility that Edinburgh becomes a focus of protest itself. Edinburgh is one of the top business cities in Europe, with the HQ to one of the biggest banks in Europe, the Royal Bank of Scotland. Many banks are based on George Street, a street once said to be richest in Europe in terms of money flow controlled from it.

Gleneagles itslef is roughly halfway between Glasgow and Dundee, a mile or so from the small town of Auchtertarder.

The hotel itself, surrounded by a couple of golf courses, only has a couple of hundred rooms. Whilst the may bring in temporary accomodation for security staff and the like, many of the advisors, press and hangers on will probably need to be shipped in from hotels in Perth, Dundee, maybe even Edinburgh or Glasgow.

That could cause organisors major headaches.
The hotel has very few access roads. Should the A9, a dual carriageway that runs by just a mile from the hotel, find itself blocked, the whole area could come to a standstill pretty quickly. Take a look.

The area around Gleneagles is fairly hilly, nothing very big, but it ain't flat.
It is an area of small towns and smaller villages.

Politically, the area is dominated by the SNP, whilst the area is one of the Tories Scottish strongholds with up to 30% support. The Labour party register around 10% support, while radical parties such as the SSP and Greens don't seem to be organised in the area.

Scottish organisation against the G8 has been occuring for the past few months in Edinburgh, with the coming together of the RESHAPE group. More groups will doubtless be coming together shortly once the venue is confirmed.

14 months to go.......

The worst kept secret in politics has been officially confirmed now - Gleneagles will host the next G8 summit.

I think this has the possibility to be a big protest. There are so many opportunities to cause disruption.

Another interesting subplot to this G8 event is that there is widely expected to be a general election in Britain next year. Will Bliar call it before the summit or risk waiting until after it?

it would be too risky to wait till after it - thousands of anti-Bliar, anti-Bu$h and ant-capitalist demonstrators on the front page in the run up to an election is not good for PR.
