AFI make my eyes water almost instantly, as does anything else really emo, which is why I avoid it at all costs. Also the theme from Requiem for a Dream really hits me, mostly because of when I saw that film and the memories I have of that day.

I try not to liten to sad songs cause they just make me sad

I try not to listen to happy songs as they place me in a mindset so far detached from reality it's unbearable ;)

R.E.M's 'Everybody Hurts' is pretty damn depressing (if somewhat annoying)
Silver Mt Zion's 'Never Made'
Radiohead's 'Spinning Plates'
Leonard Cohen.

Orale pues.

That REM song is a great sing-along-song man. I guess it makes a big diff of what a person considers "sad" or "happy".

Heroin by Velvet Underground.

Especially when I'm on painkillers:

I don’t know just where I’m going
But I’m gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
’cause it makes me feel like I’m a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I tell ya, things aren’t quite the same
When I’m rushin' on my run
And I feel just like jesus’ son
And I guess that I just don’t know
And I guess that I just don’t know

I have made a big decision
I’m gonna try to nullify my life
’cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper’s neck
When I’m closing in on death
And you can’t help, not you guys
Or all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don’t know
And I guess that I just don’t know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I’d sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor’s suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don’t know
Oh, and I guess that I just don’t know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it’s my wife and it’s my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I’m better off than dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don’t care anymore
About all the jim-jim’s in this town
And all the politicians makin’ crazy sounds
And everybody puttin’ everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

’cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don’t care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
Heh, And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I’m as good as dead
And thank your God that I’m not aware
And thank God that I just don’t care
And I guess I just don’t know
Oh, And I guess I just don’t know

The saddest songs:

the Freshmen - The Verve Pipe

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

Pure Morning - Placebo

You don't know how it feels - Tom Petty

In that order.

Hurt by Johnny Cash is sadder than Hurt by NIN, which has a different quality, it's an expression of something quite strange, and and although it's about depression and stuff, it's not "sad".

My sweet prince by placebo is sad, I remember listening to it when I was 14 and crying because it made me think of my boyfriend commiting suicide (he never did, I just imagined it because of that song)

The whole of Dirt by Alice in Chains is sad because it's so prophetic. To hear this junkie talking about his addiction like that is, well, mind-blowing. I don't personally know any junkies but I imagine not many are so articulate. It's a real education, that's for sure, and one of my all time fave albums.

I think that "MY Little Empire" is sadder than Everlasting by the manics.

Sad song by Hell is For Heroes is quite sad (suprised?)

Halway to the bottom by aqualung is also sad

Good call on Zombie by the way.

My little empires funny, it shows the absolute irony of dictatorships.

"My royalty it does not exist
It is extinct for the eye to see
My ideology it is dead and gone
Almost forgotten for the eye to see"

haha I no lnger find you don't know how it feels, a sad song. It is a sad song, the lyrics and etc, its very sad, but ever since my drummer took y mic and started sinignt htat song with the CD, I can't find it sad lol. He ever had actions, like the "some grow stonr some grow cold" I think it was, i'm only sure of the "grow cold" part, but he was like pretending to shiver...and his singing was really bad. His mom came downstairs and said: "you odn't know how it sounds!" with the melody. it was funny, good times.

To start off: Each of those songs hold individual "sad" meaning to me.

Johnny Cash' version is quite sad, however NIN's version has me from long before Johnny Cash came out with his version.

I know on the cover "Pure morning" isn't your typical "sad" song. However it holds meaning to myself, and brings back some horrible times.

As for "Burger Queens", the song is sad however does not compare personally. While most of the cd is quite downing, Pure Morning really gets me. Other personal sad songs on the Without You I'm Nothing cd are "The Crawl" "My Sweet Prince" and "Summer's Gone".

The album all around is quite "sad", and really gets to me resulting from some time ago.

As for "Sleeping with Ghosts", I only own Without You I'm Noting and haven't heard "Sleeping with Ghosts".

Again, Tom Petty's "You don't know how it feels" is another song with personal meaning. My original list of songs are songs that hit very hard with me.

I think Reznor's version is far sadder. For me, Cash changing the line to "...this crown of thorns" changed the entire meaning behind the song and it lost its power.

I have to agree with Mentalbunny, AIC's entire Dirt album is sad but 'Down In A Hole" is my saddest song from the album.

Aimee Mann - Today's The Day
Sting/Alanis Morissette - King Of Pain
Sting - Message In A Bottle
Placebo - The Crawl
Placebo - My Sweet Prince
Dave Matthews Band - Typical Situation
Evanescene - My Immortal
Johnny Mandel - Suicide Is Painless
Marilyn Manson - Coma White
Metallica - Fade To Black
Metallica - Sanitarium
Metallica - Harvester Of Sorrow
NIN - Fragile
NIN - Hurt
NIN - Somewhat Damaged
Nirvana - You Know You're Right
Nirvana - Pennyroyal Tea
Alanis Morissette - That I Would Be Good
Radiohead - Street Spirit
Radiohead - The Bends
Staind - Outside
Staind - Layne
Staind - Epiphany
Tears For Fears/Gary Jules - Mad World (Gary Jules' version is much better)
AIC - Rain When I Die
Smashing Pumpkins - For Martha
System Of A Down - Roulette

Just a small selection from a huge list. I don't have any sad songs in the traditional songs but the above are songs that I take comfort in.

jim dean of indiana---phil ochs (http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~trent/ochs/lyrics/jim-dean-of-indiana.html): it actually took me two years to figure out that this was about james dean, the "east of eden" james dean. it really makes you look at him differently as a person.

te recuerdo amanda---victor jara (http://www.g-sistah.com/showsong.php?id=19105): i think this was written about victor jara's mother who died when he was only 15. in the song she is going to visit her husband who is a laborer. she loved him immensely even though he was drunk and abusive. for those of you who don't know, victor jara was a victim of the pinochet coup. he played and sang to 5,000 frightened, doomed men till his hands were maimed, he was beaten, and then slain. he also inspired a song (http://www.arlo.net/lyrics/victor-jara.shtml) about his life.

i dreamed i saw joe hill last night (http://struggle.ws/songs/usa/joehilldream.html) or the other version by billy bragg i dreamed i saw phil ochs last night (http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~trent/ochs/lyrics/i-dreamed-i-saw-phil-ochs.html): these songs really hit you if you've read the story behind the person. personal songs. those hurt the most.

le petit cheval---george brassens: i couldn't find the lyrics anywhere but i listened to this song all the time when i was in france. it's about a little white horse who lived on a plain with really bad weather the whole time. he's never ever known nice times but he didn't feel too bad about it or complain. he just lived his simple humble life till one day during a terrible storm he was struck down by lightning. i think it goes something like "mais un jour dans le mauvais temps / il est mort par an eclair blanc / il est mort sans voir le beau temps / tous derriere e tous devant." tragic.

little girl blue---originally by nina simone but i like janis joplin's version as well (http://www.janisjoplin.net/lyrics/blue.html): i tend to think of janis joplin as little girl blue partially because she's my favorite blues mama but primarily because of her teenage years. when she did it though, she made the ending different than nina simone. janis ended with "i know just how you feel, i swear i do" where nina put "why won't somebody please send a tender blue boy to cheer up little girl blue?". maybe this is just because this is a live track only released on a rerelease of pearl and i haven't heard any other versions or maybe janis was just improvising like she usually did, but i find that a bit surprising. her ending just makes the song taper off while nina simone's brings it to a definite close.

and the ultimate sad song of my childhood is the golden vanity. i don't think i really understood it till i was 10 or 11 and ever since then i've always felt like crying. but i've always loved it.

There was a ship that sailed all on the lowland sea
And the name of the ship was the Golden Vanity
And we feared she would be taken by the Spanish enemy
As she sailed upon the lowland, lowland, lowland
Sailed upon the lowland sea.

Then up spoke our cabinboy and boldly out spoke he
And he said to our captain "What will you give to me
If I swim along the side of the Spanish enemy
And I sink her in the lowland sea?"

"Oh I will give you silver and I will give you gold
And my own fair daughter your bonny bride shall be
If you'll swim along the side of the Spanish enemy
And you'll sink her in the lowland, lowland, lowland
Sink her in the lowland sea.

Then the boy he made him ready and overboard sprang he
And he swam to the side of the Spanish enemy
With his brace and auger in her side he bored holes three
And sank he her in the lowland sea.

Then quickly he swam back to the cheering of the crew
But the captain would not heed him, his promise he did rue
And he scorned his poor entreatings when loudly he did sue
And left him in the lowland, lowland, lowland
Left him in the lowland sea.

Then the boy he turned round and he swam to the port side
And up to his messmates full bitterly he cried
"O messmates, draw me up, for I'm drifting with the tide
And I'm sinking in the lowland, lowland, lowland
Sinking in the lowland sea."

Then his messmates drew him up, but on the deck he died
And they stitched him in a hammock which was so fair and white
And they low'red him overboard, and he drifted with the tide
And he sank into the lowland, lowland, lowland
Sank into the lowland sea.

definately agree with Roulette and the Radionhead ones and would like to suggest Nobodies (accoustic version) by Marilyn Manson

What if God was one of us is also quite good, think it was by Joan Osbourne or someone like that.

Stop That Train - Peter Tosh
Settle for nothing - RATM

Kickin' Stones - Big Sugar

But "6 Feet Deep" by the Ghetto Boyz is the saddest of all :(

Billie Holiday.
The Radiohead theme song to Romeo,
Anne Dudley and Jaz Coleman's Songs from the Victorious City, "Force and Fire" about the the end of the world by fire and how Middle Eastern people will become like a Volcano
also "A Survivor's Tale"
I believe her name is Sheila Chandra, "India Not Burn" about women being burned on the funeral pyre is exceptional.
"Last Night I Dreamed Somebody Loved Me," by the Smiths.
Didn't realize someone else voted this too, used to finish my radio hour with it always sad
"I will always love you," by the Cure and
Depeche Mode's "Blasphous Rumors" are also up there.
Violent Femmes song about the country man who throws his daughter down a well is fairely gruesome.
Diamanda Galas, "Vena Cava"
Throwing Muses, "Call Me" is twisted and beautifully deep, she now also investigates music
from the Southern Mountains about murdering your lover.

The saddest music would tie between Iranian which uses an instrument like an early violin for a high pitched blood curdling sadness in music much like jazz but uses a poetry of sentimentality, and Scottish bag pipes played at a military event or funeral, as they usually denote sacrifice for honor.
, also Irish love songs, always depressing, and of course, Billie Holiday, anything, and Rolling Stones, "Paint it Black"

Hurt by Reznor way surpasses Cash's version, The Downward Spiral is also a fucking depressing song:

So much blood for such a tiny little hole,
A lifetime of fucking things up fixed in an instant

Something like that anyway, I can't remember off the top of head. When you think about "Everybody Hurts" by REM it isn't all that sad, it's about holding on and not bowing down to suicide.

Well my choices would have to be

JJ72 - October Swimmer
Pink Floyd - Time
Powderfinger - These Days
At The Drive-In - Non Zero Possibility

The Smiths - How Soon is Now

"There's this club, you've got to go
You could meet someone who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own and you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry and you want to die"

In fact, most Smiths songs.

Some good calls. Anything by NIN, although I can't listen to them anymore cos they bring back memories and feelings of the days that almost killed me. Ditto Alice in Chains.

But...Staind?? AFI?? Fuck man...you guys pick out the most mediocre and unfeeling music to cry to.

The Streets - It's Too Late
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Legacy - A Modern Tale
From Autumn to Ashes - Short Stories With Tragic Endings (heh..fuck you all)
The Early November - Sunday Drive

I don't really listen to anymore sad music. It's not healthy for me.

"How Come How Long" by steevie wonder and baby face, is still the saddest song i have ever heard.

There was a girl I used to know
She was oh so beautiful
But she's not here anymore
She had a college degree
Smart as anyone could be
She had so much to live for
But she fell in love
With the wrong kinda man
He abused her love and treated her so bad
There was not enough education in her world
That could save the life of this little girl
How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts
As well as your eyes
She tried to give a cry for help
She even blamed things on herself
But no one came to her aid
Nothing was wrong as far as we could tell
That's what we'd like to tell ourselves
But no, it wasn't that way
So she fell in love
With the wrong kinda man
And she paid with her life
For loving that man
So we cannot ignore,
We must look for the signs
And maybe next time we could save somebody's life

We've had it at least twice, the second time you told me you didn't want to get into it again. It was around the time I first joined. You were on the 'music is more important than lyrics" side and you didn't win, you just gave up and took the "agree to disagree" route. =D

Well I definitely wouldn't say that today.

Why do they have to be relative?? Both are pretty crucial if you ask me...

Both are crucial but I find that if the lyrics are good, I can listen to music which might not really be my taste, unless it was techno.

sometimes the lyrics are really important, sometimes it's the music. It doesn't have to be the same importance for every single bloody piece, does it now? It really depends on the basic concept of the song or whatever it is, how they are expressing something, what they are expressing, all that. The music and the lyrics are just tools for this aim of expression. At least that's what i reckon, but since I know so little about music that may be a total pile of bollocks.

that dead prez song thats about one of the MC's having a crackhead brother, cant remember the name, its off the 3rd album, that always gets me a little teary eyed. B.I.G.'s suicidal thoughts is pretty haunting too. But my all time saddest song has to go to girl from the north country by bob dylan. I dont really know why cause the lyrics aren't all that sad, it just has a weird vibe to it.

Enigma,

Yeah it is. I wasn't sure if he did it alone or not so I put down Sting, I guess I was wrong. I think he plays guitar on her version aswell, it was done on Unplugged. Not positive about it though. Great song.
