I can't beleive it...The best Drummer in the history of music has died. Coltrane was quoted as saying "Sometimes he goes too fast for me."
I am really bummed today.
well, let's discuss our memories and favorite moments of Elvin

He worked with Monk too, and others I belive.. He invented a kind of cyclical drumming, circular rhythems.. He was self taught, a true Jazz legend, I lament his passing...
"I made up my mind when I was 13", recalls Jones, "That I wouldn't be a doctor or a fireman, I would be a drummer".

"Flaying is not something I do at night" he said, "It's my function in life"
It should probally be more of who didn't he play with, I mean, Mingus, Bud Powell, Coltrane, backed for Charlie Parker and Miles at the Bluebird Inn.
In Peace. (http://www.doubletimejazz.com/Duncan_6.jpg)

I haven't heard a lot by Elvin, but what I did hear was incredible. I'm not deeply familiar with jazz, so I may be a tad ignorant, but he is possibly the best drummer I've heard, easily rivaling many of the 'great' rock drummers.
And though it's probably nearly everyone's opinion, but A Love Supreme was his best stuff out of what I've heard him play so far.
I may have to listen to the album again with more attention to Jone's drumming, but I always really liked Pursuance.
Very sad news to hear...
was he doing any musical work recently, or not?

he had a gig last month, but not really.
I think he is definately the best drummer of all time, followed by G. Baker

Hang on a mo, Clyde Stubberfield was no slouch on the skins, his breaks practically gave birth to Hip Hop.. And what about hand drummers, Jack Costanzo is the man, but when I asked these hombre's in Cuba about him, they'd never heard of him!
Stupid embargo..

Ginger Baker was doing Fusion about 3 years before fusion. Not that jazz-rock is too much to get excited about, but he was playing like Max Roach in a rock and roll band.

Anyone remember Our Lady Peace with Elvin Jones, "Stealing Babies" on the Happiness... album? Good stuff. OLP sucks now, though!
