This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. Orthodox Jews are burning their wigs in a clear display of their intolerence of other religions. I think this is nothing but blatant racism!

They're burning the wigs because the wigs were used in other Religious ceremonies. No more or less ridiculous than any other great amount of superstitions I can think of. I fail to see the outrage factor here at all.

Perhaps I misunderstand the situation.

They're burning women's hair just because it was chopped off in a Hindu ceromony. Why burn it? Why not just not wear it? It's like saying "Hinduism is evil and we must burn them to kill off the evil Hindu spirits". It's bloody insane!

I see the point. that's pretty bad. There are people like that from all religions though, so unfortunately it's not surprising.

Tee Hee, yeah, equally insane.

Mind you, I do refuse to buy oranges from Israel. That's 'cause I hate zionism though, not Jews.

It is insane. It's not racist, it's just a silly superstition.
I don't give a shit.

I'm with cani. If this outrages you, you should really examine your priorities. Also, I'm curious why a self proclaimed communist would have a nationalistic flag for an avatar.

Furthermore, do you buy oranges from the US?

BOE, I would lay off that.

I wouldn't consider a Palestinian flag to be a "Nationalistic flag".

I'm assuming s/he is a Palestinian, in which case it makes sense to feel bad about buying anything from Israel.

Much likes the boycotts of South Africa during Apartheid.

Damn I opened this topic hoping the British barristers finally got rid of those damned things.

If I bought oranges and I knew where tehy were from, I'd stay away from israeli ones as well. And I'm not a Palestinian. And own a Palestinian flag. It isn't nationalistic to support a struggle against nationalistic oppression and insurgency.

And i aslo agree atht it's pretty silly. Not in any way an outrage. Who cares if they're burning Indian wigs? It isn't hateful of Hinduism, it's intolerant of other faiths. If they were made during a tradiional ceremony to Zeus, they'd aslo reject them. It's silly superstition, yes, but not racist.

I am outraged by religious intolerenve YES! It's the cause of many problems. It's religious fundamentalists like Bush that are the cause of so much of todays suffering! Those people held public ceremonies burning wigs because they came from a different faith! I don't mind them wanting to have 'kosher' wigs but this is a clear show of hate!

Also, I'm curious why a self proclaimed communist would have a nationalistic flag for an avatar.

First off I am not a communist. I wouldn't like to put myself in any pigeon hole. I called myself that as a play on 'dot com' as many people from other boards over the pond have called me a commie.

And as Palestine is under occupation there is no longer a nation of Palestine so I don't consider that flag to be nationalistic! It represents an oppressed people. It's not like US,UK and Israeli flags that represent war, terrorism, greed and racism. It is a symbol of struggle and resistance.

Furthermore, do you buy oranges from the US?

I try to boycott American products but I have to admit it ain't that easy as everywhere you look we are surrounded by them.

Bar codes are a good indication of where products are from. Israeli products start with 729. And yeah, I have Palestinian flags and scarfs and I'm not a Palestinian eigher.

Burning wigs is the cause of the world's problems? It's pretty stupid, granted, but then again, so is Judaism and Hinduism.

BOE, I would lay off that.

How is it not a nationalistic flag?

And as Palestine is under occupation there is no longer a nation of Palestine so I don't consider that flag to be nationalistic!

But it advocates one, does it not?

It's not like US,UK and Israeli flags that represent war, terrorism, greed and racism.

Uh, yes it is. While I can certainly understand their frustration, I dare you to walk up to a Palestinian nationalist and say you're Jewish nationalist. Not racist? I beg to differ.

However, that's not really the major problem. The fact is that nationalism is not an acceptable solution to imperialism and oppression.

If I bought oranges and I knew where tehy were from, I'd stay away from israeli ones as well.

I try to buy oranges from small growers, but if I have to buy from large corporations, frankly I don't give a fuck what country they come from.

this is just one of the many reasons religion must eventually be abolished

I don't think it's racist, really, they didn't just do it because it was done in a Hindu ceremony, I think. I thought however, that kosher laws only applied to the diet, not what hair that you wore and why burn it ? Why not just throw it away in the bin or something.

I agree entirely.

Perhaps, more civil servants should don the wig, at least we could all get a good laugh. :P

The reason Barristers and Judges wear wigs is because it is said to make them appear more impartial.

"Orthodox women often wear wigs because custom requires that they cover their own hair in public once married."

...ha. Where Im from if you bought it, its your hair.
