View Full Version : The Smiths and Morrissey

I can thoroughly say that the smiths and their mopey brainchild, Morrissey, suck. I can make this analysis after listening to what I have heard are their two "best" albums. It's one thing to be out-spoken, as dear M. is, and have some kind of talent, but to be mouthy, vapid and lack any visage of musical talent is really something different alltogether. And another thing about this depressing music bullshit (you know, The Cure and these frauds too)-What the fuck are you whining about!? Both bands keep making the money and keep whining and whining and whining like they had something to be sad about. This isn't even like blues artists who made a substantial amount of money and keep singing the blues. That's totally different. The Blues are about pain (which a black man in the south understands a hell of a lot better than some whiny fop from Manchester, I'd wager).
Morrissey goes out of his way to insult other, talented, musicians as well (he called Prince "Ponce" and has said several...choice things about Kurt Cobain-not my favorite guy, but more talented than this Vanilla Ice monster), like he was the greatest thing on Earth. I think Morrissey and Robert Smith (or whatever that hair-in-my-eyes idiot's name is) both need to wake up and stop putting trashing albums out that nobody but the senseless listen too.

I agree completely. Morrisey is a dull mithanthropist and his lyrics are full of complaints about stupidly trivial things which he cares not to divulge any solution to. Its basicly pessemistic bull-crap which all sounds the same, Marr is definatly not the genius he's hyped up to be - same riffs and same rythm throughout.

 I love the smiths and the cure...but maybe thats cuz i love anything that makes me want to die... ;) Personally I love their lyrics, some are just plain hillarious ("some girls are bigger than others, some girls mothers are bigger than other girls mothers") and some are just depressing as all hell ("I can feel the soil falling over my head..See, the sea wants to take me. The knife wants to slit me. Do you think you can help me?") I guess it just depends on what kind of music you prefer...the whiny bastards I hate are the mocosos (snot nosed brats) like Good Charlotte...but I'm not starting a thread about it cuz I know that its not my generation...
So why exactly don't you like it? Cuz they whine? Why aren't they allowed to make depressing music?

Firstly I don't like them because they lack talent
secondly, they both annoy me (as enumerated above)

Morrisey's a he. He's one of those pretentious goofballs that feels he's too important for a second name, kind of like Madonna, Sting, or Cher. In any case, I have to respect Morrisey and his former band The Smiths for basically starting the Straight Edge movement. The whole Meat is Murder album is somewhat anthemic for those of us of the vegetarian pursuasion.

Who exactly defines what "TALENT" is? What you might think is talented or untalented might be different for someone else...
Okay, so if they annoy you, DON'T LISTEN TO IT. I don't like country music nor most of the rap on the radio now...so I stay away from it. Also, since they annoy YOU... so automatically they are untalented? Have you listened to any of their songs?
Of course I'll stick with Sade...she's my lady ;) But, I like many MANY other artists...

Talent isn't a matter of opinion. None of these shiftless fuckers can pick up musical instruments and play them any better than a toddler could

hm...I guess the countless number of fans and albums sold to THIS DAY...twenty years after the fact, means absolutely nothing right?
And talent IS a matter of opinion. Everyone has different viewpoints and standards to what talent is....I don't think anyone is in any position to create a standard of what does suck and what doesn't. Different styles and genres are created because of this....and personally if I don't particularly LIKE some type of music, I don't condemn those who DO like it.
It's a great thing to agree to disagree....respect is one hell of a thing.

I like Morrissey, purely for the fascinating lyrics.
And his first name is Stephen, or Steven (not sure on the spelling), but he changed to Morrisey because Stephen reminds him of when he was really young and he wasn't at all happy then. He's not "happy" now, but y'know some people are like that.
I think he has a talent, I really like his lyrics, but I admit, you can have too much of him and the Smiths, although, of course, most of his fans disagree.
id never heard of this morrisey twat until he was on jonathon ross program a couple of nights ago, my god, what a complete wanker.
the guy really should lighten up, and his music is nothin to shout about (as i changeed the channel when the muppet started making noises at the microphone...)

Steve Morrisey actually tried out for The clash in 1976....
I personally don't like his music, or much of the Smiths for that matter.
Rasta is being quite the ball breaker today...of course these guys have talent...They are actually quite good musicians. It's one think not to dig the tunes brutha, but to say they play like toddlers is a bit extreme.

Wow, what a typically enlightened thread.
Talent means fuck all. I can't understand why someone would wanna listen to someone exhibit all their skills like some kinda circus show...when in reality the music means fuck all and lacks feeling. Fuck it, get music of passion, of emotion and real fuckin feeling.
I'm just getting into The Smiths and I'm listening to them right now. It's nice chill music. I especially like "This Charming Man".

Talent means fuck all
What a load of rubbish. Yes you should have passion and energy with your music but talent is absolutely crucial. Look how passionate Hendrix was, you think he could have conveyed so much of that in his music if he was untalented?

I wasn't saying music shouldn't be talented, just that i listen to Led Zeppelin cos they sound fuckin cool, not cos OmG thERe GiTaRRisT iS SoOOoOo aWeSuM!!!!!11!!!!!1!1
If you only listen to music to marvel at someone else's exhibitionism, then I feel sorry for you. Get your poseur mits on some music that affects you in a way other than exaggerated "wonder".

i like morrissey and the smiths, but not obsessivly so. and yes at times they are a little depressing, and alot of the time morrisseys comes accross as quite obnoxious but shouldnt we be greatful for a band/person that actually has a brain, writes their own lyrics and doesnt constantly sing about love?

So you equate happiness with money, spoken like a true communist...;)
The Cure make good music, maybe you think a band is about the lyrics but for any music lover I know The Cure are good because the bass is amazing, you wont find many bass dominated bands anywhere except maybe NewOrder/Joy Division.
Morrisey is ok, good lyrics, interesting although not a great band but thats down to the music aswell, not a great band in my eyes.

"And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine"
