Here are some musings I typed down early one morning... they had been running round my head all night and so I decided to pin them down:

If there is a spiritual element to the universe, then reason and rationality go out of the window, as they are nothing next to the whim of the gods.

Atheists are often seen as dark and cynical. But the truth is that they are the most happy of men, as their fate is not tied with that of some tawdry idol.

It is often debated whether monotheism or polytheism is better, but if the choice is between a domineering parent or argumentative older siblings, why bother?

The priesthood are nothing more than cynical exploiters of the weak-willed and the weak minded, that is all.

last words are very important for an atheist. If his name is not written in the book of life, he'd better leave some graffiti on the walls of paradise instead.

If it exists, Hell is very much like Earth. Except it isn't full of annoying Christians, and therefore vastly improved.

Woe betide he who believes Zionism is progressive in any way. Especially if he is a non-Jew.

All the posturing by religion and philosophy on the state of mankind has not amounted to a steaming pile of fecal matter in all the thousands of years they have been around. Science, on the other hand, has done nothing but improve the human condition, curing polio, malaria, and the number one killer disease, superstition.

One way to disprove the existance of God/s is to simply observe the universe. You will see that it follows a set of rules. The thing is we haven't discovered what all the rules are, and it's this lack of knowledge that is keeping the God racket going.

Although it seems so, magic unfortunately is not dead. people will still believe the validity of astrology, tarot card readings, and the healing powers of crystals. This absurdity is not only a shoddy substitute for real medicine and reason; it is a shoddy substitute for religion itself. One can only hope such fake, commercialised 'magic' will seep into mainstream religion.

Religion's typical denial of human physical pleasure goes very much against the human tendency to have lots of sex, imbibe alcohol, use drugs and eat lots of interesting food. A simpleton could easily see that such denial is yet another control mechanism of religion. Unfortunately, if you dress this pleasure-denial up in a load of spiritual mumbo-jumbo, it somehow becomes valid.

It is often claimed Science is a secular religion. However, while the basic principle of science is to question authority, even your own, religion tells you to put your trust in books written by desert nomads thousands of years ago.

Religion is terrible when it comes to sex before marriage; even some capitalists have a 'try before you buy' policy.

Rosaries should be treated like grenade necklaces; handled with care before being thrown away as far as possible.

Asking a Communist what he thinks about Capitalists is like asking a tree what it thinks about woodpeckers.

There is nothing immoral about stealing from rich people. However if you get caught it's your own silly fault.

Marx was unfair to opium when he compared it to religion. Smoking an O will not turn you into a rabid reactionary clerical fascist, where as that is a definite possibility with religion.

I can't decide on an avatar which best represents my views/personality/outlook on the world. I feel it's something that can't be pinned down with a single picture.

I get the impression your views on Religion reveal more of an inclination on your part to want to believe them more than them actually being true. Through my reading of history, philosophy, politics etc and my own personal experience I don't believe much of what you say.

You're right. I do want to believe them. I would like to reap the benefits of being a good christian/muslim/hindu whatever. But so far religion has given me sod-all.
I've had no proof or garuantee that following a religion will get me whatever that religion promised.

I was saying you want to believe them more than them actually being true.

I've had no proof or gurantee that following a religion will get me whatever that religion promised

Surely Religion isn't like that though, you're believing because its the truth not that it will bring you anything. I'm also a great believer in Religion being something very particular, something you have to decide for yourself. After all, this isn't a simple thing your giving into, its an entire life. We also shouldn't base our opinions of religion on the followers.
