frankly, no matter how hard i try , i cant say music id bad seeing as how its a form of art , and art cant be judged as "good" or "bad" so i figured , why the hell not judge genres!!! ive decided in my own small world that tech/metal is possible the most pathetic form of music ever...atleast consistantly

What is tech/metal?? Please give an example.
I personally hate the techno/trance/annoying incessant beats with no lyrics, and seems to last for far too long and usually longer.

Genre doesn't exist either, and it makes music a hell of a lot more confusing.
If you must put into genre's 2 will suffice: Good and Bad. And these are objective, and hence of no use
In other words
Just enjoy what you enjoy and ignore what you don't. :D

I think that every major genre of music has something or other good to offer except hardcore/emo/emocore/screamo/etc.
By 'major genre' I mean like punk, heavy metal, phychadelic, blues, jazz, r & b, progressive rock, classical, pop, etc.
I know the there are endless sub-genres of heavy metal and probably also of punk. Many of which likely suck balls. So I'm not including those. I'm only including major genres.

There's plenty of shit generes: pop, country, nu-"metal," pop-"punk," emo, mainstream "cash money" rap, etc.

There's a lot of good pop. The Beatles for starters.
I wouldn't say that I dislike country because there's a lot of good bluegrass, blues, and folks that often comes close to country. The rest I can agree with.

How dare you include country as one of the worst genres. Pop country bullshit like Garth Brooks and Toby Kieth are horrible, but there is some amazing country music, especially old stuff.
Why do people feel like if they don't like something it automatically "sucks" ? Are you guys so blind you can't see that your tastes aren't the word of God ?
I wouldn't really say any genre of music "sucks", in fact, there are songs from just about every genre that I enjoy, with the possible exception of techno/electronic shit. Don't get me wrong, it's fine to dislike things and make fun of them, but to say something as well established as country "sucks" is insane to me. This doesn't apply to individuals though, I could name a million "artists" that just plain suck balls.
Actually, disco pretty much sucked. But damn, there were even a few good disco tunes.
Oh, and pop isn't a genre. Blink 182, Backstreet Boys, Sum 41, Madonna, Britney Spears, Nelly, Puff Daddy, all of that shit if pop. Pop simply means music designed soley to sell records.
Edit: Victor, please refrain from commenting on things you don't know much about. Hardcore and Emo are two completely different things. I won't get too into it, but Emo has taken on some of the elements of hardcore, thus creating this new sub genre of punk, but real emo is very melodic, emotional music that is nothing like hardcore.

how very postmodernist of you.... what a pathetic line to take "it's art, so we can't judge it".......replace the word art with religion and we have the dark ages all over again...
yeah i agree it is extremely ignorant and jaundist to say one genre (if such a term is anything but subjective) is "shite" etc..
to add my 2 cents however, the worst band i have heard would definately have to be AMEN.....i saw them live and it was awsome! really cool live show, but yeha then i borrowed their cd(we have come for your parents), and i seriously couldn't listen past the second song...i forced myself to listen to other parts of the album, and the 1st 2 songs were dfinately the best on the album.......and they were complete fucking shite!!

Kidding, of course.
Music is best when not manufactured, when it is written by the artist or for the artist who performs it (living a life of imitation means that you live somneone else life, not your own. Its a waste of a life.) and is without any censorship. Music is an ancient artform, and it must be preserved and enjoyed.

are you trying to have a go at industrial or are you just plain stupid
I agree with what many has said about music being an ancient form of art, and sections of genres should not be categorized as good or bad. It all depends on taste and lifestyle. I have respect for all the forms of the art, but personally, me and my band practice heavy metal and heavy rock which is also my favorite musical genre.
I think however, the genre of the art which is made up of the worst musicians is the pop industry. Find me an ugly, famous, pop idol (which is popular at this time) and I'll consider changing my mind. It's all about money, especially in the pop genre, sadly.

I'm not feelin anything that has a kazoo in it. But other than that I find it really hard to say a genre that just straight up sucks. Techno music comes real close though, as do narco corridos.

Maybe cause you're not supposed to listen to it sobre or while sitting at home.
I don't like techno or trance much, but if you're dancing on Ecstacy, which is what it's designed for, it doesn't feel long or incessant.
Not that I've taken E, but any upper will do. Mushrooms really make you pretty sensitive and hyper, and when I was on that techno fucking tripped me out.

I think that when we criticize music, it's understood that it's only our opinion.

While emo is obviously a different type of music, I would certainly consider it a sub-genre of hardcore. Listen to the beats of the music, and you'll hear the similarities. And emo is occasionally pretty fast and heavy. You probably know more than me, so I won't try to argue, but I won't deny that emo is similar to hardcore. Enough so to be a "sub-genre".

Well, Emo is a sub genre of punk first of all. Hardcore is as well. Now, "screamo" is an amalgamation of hardcore and emo.
When I think emo I think of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, ever heard them ? Real, authentic emo is generally pretty mellow.
Dr. Rosenpenis
14th May 2004, 02:27
I always thought of emocore as more of a mixture between the two. Screamo is more like emo with some screaming. Emocore is like Posion the Well or Autumn to Ashes. Screamo is more like Orchid, The Assistant, A Days Refrain, and Fall on Deaf Years. There is a bit of a difference.

Meh, I consider Emocore and "screamo" to be the same thing. I just think people gave emocore a cute name, screamo.
This shit gets confusing though. I think From Autumn to Ashes is much more on the metal side than on the punk/harcore side. Who really cares ? I don't like the shit, and neither do you, why are we even talking about this ? It gets too confusing when sub-genres have sub-genres.

I cannot comprehend how someone could diss Goldie's Inner City Life . I mean, that track practically sparked everything off for me, and even till today, I consider it to be one of the most complete dnb tracks of all time.

I go with the line, no shit genres just shit musicians.
Seriously everything has some good tunes, if you're talking about pop I'd point at Aqua (who actually aren't manufactured and wrote almost all of the album Aquarium). And are we talking genres or subgenres? Sub-genres annoy the fuck out of me. Generally I stick to the most general names, there's no point in trying to pidgeon hole bands, because in reality most bands have influences from all over the place and it's doing them an injustice to try to define them so narrowly, and if you try to make a name that incorporates anything it's just stupid, if you do that we'll end up with emo-post-nu-goth-rap-techno or something equally ridiculous.

End genres, like what was stated earlier, my philosophy is that genres are separated by opinion. The Clash is labeled punk... I consider them to be more ska. it is indeed true that genre can ruin music.

Personaly, I think 'genres' are quite a useful thing in that they help us distinguish (or at least help us describe) different types of music.
Many people have tried to say this, but I would like to reword the word: is this thread "What is the worst genre?" or "Which genre do you (in your opinion) hate the most?" So the 'word of God' thing was a good point.
Anyway, the genres I dislike the most (in the general sense, as I'm not omniscient in music) are country, punk (except some anarchist punk), pop (in the 'only to sell records' sense), and others I can't remember (maybe). But then again, I like some nu-metal.

I'd like to get rid of commercial hip-hop and r'n'b most. I'm getting really bored of hearing guys just talking about sex like women are whores or something. We need more real music, of all genres. Also, I'm not such a big country fan, but blues is awesome.

There's music, then there's shit that is so bad it isn't really music. Genres don't matter. I wholeheartedly agree with metalbunny that there's no shit genres, just shit musicians. As RedZeppelin pointed out, the Beatles are pop. What's being passed off today as pop (N-synk and that stuff) isn't worth listening to. Hip-hop can be great if you listen to great artists. Punk is the Clash, it's the Sex Pistols, even some of John Lennon after he left the Beatles was punk. Real punk has something to say. Real music has something to say. A lot of the stuff you find around doesn't. Any true music, whatever its genre, has something positive to contribute.

sadly , im not a mod, just a member of a band named " the mods"
example of tech/metal...errr , id have to say things along the lines of early metallica and every techno ever made....mixed into one song...then manufactured again and again. imagine a techno beat with a guy singing throat... its horrible. i think the biggest problems with genres , is the fact that the genre starts out as something that embodies an idea... like punk... it was an idea, then turned into a sound. hair metal.... same thing , im sure the hair part displayed the excess and opulence of it all... later turn out to be a bunch really bad music being made with annoying and pathetic lyrics

It's all relative, I for example cant stand the latest metallica album, doesnt mean the band is shite and cant make music.

I get called an emo kid, (Im not) so Ill add some thoughts...
I dont see how people can say emo music came from hardcore or punk, I mean, if Sunny Day Real Estate was a forerunner of emo (which theyre not emo), I fail to see any connection.
I consider emo to be Dashboard style crap, emocore/screamo are basically the same thing, hardcore emo...
Original underground emo music was hardcore, so yes, I will say that was obviously based off of hardcore, but the mainstream emo foundings was not from anything hard.
The new wave of emo is very punkish.
Of course, this is all from my observations.
If I wanted to label a genre as horrible... I cant say really... I dislike mainstream emo, but it produced some good un-emo bands, so it had its uses. I also firmly believe in labels for the ease of understanding, if you wish to abolish a label system, stop typing, get up from your chair (which isnt a chair anymore) and hang yourself by a thing other people call a rope that you refuse to call a rope because, hey, labels are stupid.
