Good question.

The only real answer I can provide is lots.

70 years ago it would be an easy question to answer. People would categorically fall into the groups of working class, middle class and so on.

At least in the UK today however, classes don't really exist, at least not to the extent that they used to. Perhaps more importantly, people don't feel to belong in any one class. Many people who I might call working class may not consider themselves to be so, indeed they may have not thought about the idea of 'class' at all.

No longer do groups of similar economic and social status live within close easily recognisible locales. To a large extent, at least in Britain, there is a degree of 'class fragmentation'. The traditional classes are almost unrecognisible, in the same sense that they used to be.

Such circumstances make any notion of 'class consciousness' very unrealistic in the near future.

There are six classes in today's world. Not all of these are present in all countries. There have also been other classes in previous societies (eg. Feudal nobles) but they don't really exist anymore.

Working class (proletariat): those of us who must sell our labor to survive but whose jobs do not give us the power to hire and fire.

Capitalist class (bourgeoisie): Those who can survive off what they own (via income from stocks, interest, etc.) in a capitalist society. They live off the labor of workers and sometimes other classes below them. Classic examples are the Rockefellers, Hitlons, Fords, Waltons & the like.

Techno-managerial class: Those who have to sell their labor to survive but have substantial power over workers, with the power to hire and fire. They are hired by the capitalists to control the workers. Middle management and the like.

Petty Bourgeoisie: Small business owners

Peasants: Live and work off the land, neither selling their labor nor buying other people's labor.

Slaves: Self-explanatory. Today most are sex slaves.

Of course, capitalists spread lots of propaganda about how "class doesn't exist anymore" and such, but economic hierarchy (class) still exists despite the fantasies capitalists spin.

In the third world they have lots of slaves, not only sex slaves.

Peasants: Live and work off the land, neither selling their labor nor buying other people's labor.

In many countries they still have both small peasants and the rich ones. In most of the western world farming have today turned into almost factories. With the farmer employing people. So he is more like a capitalist.

Of course, capitalists spread lots of propaganda about how "class doesn't exist anymore" and such, but economic hierarchy (class) still exists despite the fantasies capitalists spin.

Amen brother! :)

Ok here is the classes in Today's world:They are in order........They are also American I don't know about other countries.

The lowest class the Homless and Welfare people who struggle to survive have no homes and live on the streets

The Hippies are a class in Hawaii I don't think on the North American Continet but there are thousands of Hippies where I live. Hippies although Soclaists do alot of drugs, try to act like Bob Marly, Mostly live in the juggle or a shack growing Marajuana, they are Buddists and they all drink coffe they don't have jobs but some how manage to survie in Communes.

Red Necks who go to church work hard. and live in trailers.

Proletariat the good old working class who have a small house and a big starving family to feed. Farmers are in this group here to because the Farmers of Nerbraska, Kansas, Ohio, North Dakota and several others are all struggeling......there is no such thing as a peasnet in the U.S sorry people

The Middle Class, people who have a fairly decent life style and live in the rich suberbs and they are the all American Family.

The Honest Mechants:THe People who start small reserauts and stores to help there families. Also called the Petty Bourgeoisie

Intelache:(Intelligent) are the people that are the Artists, Muscians, Writers and Poets. They arn't rich by there sure are not poor. In my mind this is one of the most important classes. Includes College Students

Yuppies (Young Urban Class proffesional) these people are even wealthier then the middle class and come strait out of college with riches. I hate Yuppies the most.

The Capitalists:The Poloticians, Hollywood actors, The Military, The cops, the big buieness owners and Bill gates. They go to other countires and extort money form the poor people who get paid 25 cents and hour. The Capitalists rule America making sure no one gets on top except mabey a Yuppie or two.

That is the class sytem of America
Sorry about spelling
