I expect most people on here have heard of these guys but I thought I'd post this for those who havn't, as they are an insperation to everyone. True unsung heroes of American history.

Basically they were sent to America to fight in the war to steal California from mexico (1846-48). When they arrived and saw Americans raping and killing catholic nuns they switched sides and threw on Mexican uniforms and fought for Mexico. An Irish imigrant deserter called John Riley assembled an Irish army of more than 200 troops. These guys fought bravely until they were finally defeated at Churubusco. Where John Riley was captured. He was later given 50 lashes and branded with a 'D' (deserter) and many of his compañeros were hung.

Yeah its pretty cool, last batallion to surrender. Look into Irish history abroad and you will see the same in places like Chile and especially in any country the British invaded. The Irish always fought against imperialism because we were like one of the first ever countries to be truly colonised.
