Just watched this yesterday.

Its a japanese film, so there are certain things you can expect from it but it is a really effective and interesting exploration of the themes of paranoia, survival drive and basic animal instincts.

I watched that as well.

What happened though to make the Japanese Government fail, before the students all skived?

Some of the students became like animals, hunting their classmates, whilst others tried to stop the violence, and others just trie to get away.

i watched the first 15 minutes with my friend and then made her turn it off. violence in films warps sensitivity. in other words i felt like throwing up. the concept was vile. i don't care if it's profound and gives you a new perspective on things. that's not entertainment unless you dig gratuitous violence. it's just horrible.

It isnt as violent as some other films i've seen or heard of.

I think you are too judemental. Most japanese films are like this, its a cinematographical tradition. You don't think the juxtaposition of extreme violence and sensitivity works?

what other moviewould you be able to conpare the violence to?
The Passion?
Dawn of the Dead?
Scream?
Harvey?

I agree. I think this is typical of films produced in capitalist nations, it was thoroughly immoral film. To depict humans pitted against each for survival and showing them commit atrocious acts of violence towards one another.

I watched all but the end of the film before I decided it was boring and simply quite disgusting.

Is it disgusting just because it reveals the truth. Of course the concept is oulandish but can you really dismiss some of the points raised.
Truancy is growing
Adults are feelnig threatened by kids on the street
People will behave differently in the situation the film placed them in. The survival instinct.

The gore level is probably a bit above the Scream level.

it's the gore that turned me off to it. show it to people who are a bit less sensitive to that kind of vivid imagery and need it more than i do. after about 15 minutes of that movie anyone would be strictly anti-violence for at least a week.....

Wow, a lot of people have seen this movie. And here I thought I was the only one.
I've seen 1 & 2. 1 is definately better.

Too violent? Sorry, such a consept does not exist for me.
Immoral? Well, keep your 'morals' to yourself.

The story behind the situation the children are put in is irrelevent in my opinion since it is largely ignored. The film is basically about people getting pleasure from watching humans butcher each other horribly.

In fact, the story behind the film is good in that the Japanese government is a fascist government in that time, and the situation the children are put in is quite appropriate for a fascist society.

There was no lesson or point to that story. It didn't have an engaging story either. It was just mindless violence.

people think Scream was gory? watch Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elmstreet when Johnny Depp dies, so much fucking blood. And people they are movies thats all, they really arent going to make people for violent in real life. Thats like saying everyone who has ever played a Grand Theft Auto game is a suicidal maniac.

then i must be a freak, all i came away with was that the two guys who are friends in it, on the bus and stuff, had a cool room, thats all i have seen more violent things its not really that special in that respect,
it has a great story line, the reason for them being on the island is a little warped but apart from that, its pretty damn good film, and not i repeat NOT because of the violence

I wouldn't go overboard on its political connotations, but it's a great film. If you don't like violent cinema, then best steer clear, but if you can handle that then you'll find an interesting film about what happens when a fascist ruling class starts getting a little worried about its radical youth. If the response is "all violent films are disgusting and mirror the worst aspects of capitalist society" then I agree, but there are precious few films made outside of that society so we have to pick the best we can get. Just because a film's not violent, doesn't make it watchable- give me this over "American Pie" anyday.
