I like the music from Hans Zimmer, but I have for a long time been looking for music that is challenging. Do you know of any groups or songs that evoke magical or perhaps scary feelings?

A Silver Mount Zion

It's not religious, don't worry ;) somewhat like a cross between Chicago Underground and Mogwai with a little psychodelia mixed in. I like it.

Some almost anthemic tracks out there too... pretty much all orchestral stuff, but there's a whole host of other sounds in there.

Aphex Twin.

Come To Daddy is one of the most disturbing songs i have ever listened to.
Otherwise go to newgrounds.com and look for a cartoon called "Smile", that has some mood music.

PIIICOOOOOO!

I love that site ;)

Aphex Twin is the SHIT man, I dunno why I didn't think to recommend. Selected Ambient Works is a good starter if you ain't into electronic music.

To be honest, without my music db I'm at a bit of a loss <_< :(
I'll see what I can remember as the evening progresses, else I'll try and mind to post something back when I get home

I've got rather a lot of 'interesting' music

Technical Itch, Dieselboy and Cause 4 Concern are a few names within drum n bass circles that create an almost operatic senes of melancholy and fear.

On the flipside, you can also try Bjork.

You want really creepy music?

I may have just the thing for you.

A composer named Penderecki was asked to produce a piece commemorating the victimes of Hiroshima.

You would expect him to produce a nice, sad, reflective piece.

Instead he composed a piece to make you feel like you were actually there.

Penderecki-Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima.

It's great.

One of the best examples of artistic music ever created - and one of the worst examples of 'listenable' music ever created

It certainly evokes an emotional reaction... and causes the ears to bleed

So yes, I think it serves as a reminder, but in comparison to the event the song is very tame.

A must hear though.

what sort of genre does the music fall into?

The genre of 52 string instruments screeching discordant atonal harmonies.

Nah....I'd say it's experimental music.

It's not 'nice' to listen to.

But it's certainly 'worth' listening to.

I've seen the score, the guy doesn't even use notation, it's a bunch of demonic wavy lines.

For something 'magical' might I suggest Jean Michel Jarre's earlier (late 70's) works, Equinoxe and Oxygene, both about 40mins long and containing lively and upbeat parts and also more ambient/contemplative parts, I found it really amazing as a young 'un, and it's still fascinating today.
