Ak-47, and more or less an end to starvation after Stalin died. Other than that, not much good came out of there.
Hope I would say. Hope that we can break free from our oppressors and make the world the way we want it and lessons about what we should and shouldn't do.

The best thing about any country is the people in it,
their loves their cares, their woes and anguishes, are all part of their wider culture and heritage. Unfotunately stalinism has tarred the peoples of the former ussr with some form of guilt but the guilt only lies with the counter revolutionaries and the western interventionists. They were defeated once. They shall be defeated again.
A lot of amazing books were printed in USSR, and sent to Europe free, and i happen to have a few.
So for me, all that knowledge is most important
Also, as USSR was an experiment, maybe the experience of what went wrong should be taken as important lessons

I'd agree with all of you there, but was it really an experiment? I can see what your saying in some ways, but i don't know if they would have done it as an experiment, i think all the revolutionary groups took it a little more seriously than that, i might be wrong though.

Exactly. The USSR raises questions about democracy, elitism, corruption, fanaticism, etc. Every leader who claims to pursue justice should have to study the USSR and analyze what went wrong.

Best thing that came out of the USSR was the revolutionary spirit that spread to many countries of the world. It was the spark that led to worldwide revolutions that were only defeated by the enemy of the world; the united states government

i agree with what kamo said, it gave a precedent, + errors to learn from, but it also gave ppl the belief that there is an alternative (also if it didnt embody it)

Yeah, USSR is very good example of betrayal and should not be repeaten. Remember, people must not fear its own government, becasue if they do, then it is tyranny.
It is a very good example that people must have freedom, and must not be observed by their government. Because only then socialism really works. With bureaucracy, there is only step back, not forward.

I would say the best thing to come out of the USSR was for their to be a balance of power in the world. Two superpowers that could keep each other in check. Now the US is the only superpower and are free to run rampant all over the world and do whatever they please

The best thing that came out of the USSR was to learn that what mistakes its "communism" had. From every leader that was a former communist, we must learn his mistakes and repair. If we do that, we can accomplish UTOPIA.

What about my grandfather? He knew how to make Schnapps.
As much as I hate the USSR and Cold War-era America, there was a fragile balance that relied on not one but two superpowers. If you think that what America did to communists sucked, then imagine how awful it would have been if there was no Soviet Union to be afraid of.
But of course, if there were no Soviet Union then maybe there would have been no Red Scare and McCarthy wouldn't have had his 15 minutes of fame in the first place . . . fuck it, I don't know what I'm saying. Please ignore the above post (except for the part about how much I love my grandfather).

This isn't exactly the "Best thing" to come out of the USSR, but rather, something I remember well...
I remember in the 1980's, the US and the USSR had a movie exchange, where both nation where able to view any movie they wanted from the other nation... The US picked "A Soldiers, story" about a Russian Soldier, going home during WWII. It was interesting as it was the only movie I've ever seen in the perspective of the nation that won the Second World War.
The Soviets picked "Grapes Of Wrath" naturally, and when viewing the 1930's American Socialist classic, many Soviet people remarked at how the people where portrayed as "American Poor" yet where driving cars!!
I think the write up I read in the Newspaper that day, on the reaction of the Soviet people going to see the "Grapes of Wrath" was the most interesting "Humanistic" side of the USSR I had seen. Mostly everything else was covered with propaganda from both sides... so much so... if you met a person from Russia personally you would be amazed that horns didn't grow out of their head.
