Subject: Urgent Action: Zimbabwe - release abducted trade union leader

This week's letter is entirely focussed on one country: Zimbabwe. It
includes an Urgent Action Appeal and news of this week's Labour Website
of the Week.

URGENT ACTION APPEAL:
RELEASE ABDUCTED TRADE UNION LEADER

Trade unionists around the world should be paying special attention the
elections in Zimbabwe this weekend.

This would be the case even if the only reason were that the chief
rival to Robert Mugabe is the former leader of the Zimbabwe Congress of
Trade Unions (ZCTU), Morgan Tsvangirai.

But there is another reason for all of us to focus attention on this
southern African country: the wave of repression with which Mugabe has
reacted to Tsvangirai's challenge.

This repression includes the abduction on 16 February by "war veterans"
of the President of the Zimbabwe Civil Service Employees Association,
Ephraim Tapa, and his wife Faith Mukwakwa. There is a protest letter
from the international trade movement here:

We have consulted with colleagues in Zimbabwe and South Africa and
asked for email addresses to which additional protests may be sent by
individual trade unionists and your unions.

The were the addresses we have received to which protests should be
sent:

Government:

[email protected] - the ruling party, Zanu-PF
[email protected] - the parliament

Newspapers:

There's going to be a bloodbath in Zimbabwe. Mugabe is so unpopular that he can't win the election legally. If he looses there with be a military coup and a bloodbath. If he rigs it, there will be an insurrection and a bloodbath.
