I am wondering how many of you have read this novel by Vladimir Nabokov and what your thoughts are.

Personally, I believe it is dark and twisted but and the same time intriguing and thought provoking.

I gotta admit it's a good movie, one of those movies that you nver want to see again though.

The most interesting part to me was, that I found the fact that she kept on getting money for favours to be more disturbing than the actual storyline.

The book is intriguing thats for sure and brave. Essentially I enjoyed getting into the mind of somebody who would be considered evil to see what his motives are. I felt sorry for Humbert even though some of his actions especially where he talks about sitting in the park and when lolitas friends are around. The way he has to steal snatches of joy without them ever knowing you get the feeling the guy is forever to be unfulfilled and that maybe the fact that he gets lolita destroys the illusion.

Also it is in fact very well written for somebody who was writing in their second language, the metaphors are subtle but you do get them especially when you read it again.

One of the best books of the last century, daring anyway.

I remember that when I bought the book, it felt like I was buying some dirty magazine, it amazes me that it still has that taboo to it.

I agree with Geist that I for one felt sorry for Humbert, it was obvious that Lolita played on his obsession with her. I got the impression that whilst Humbert at first held only a lust for Lolita, in the end he fell in love with the girl, and the tragedy lies in the fact that it was not a mutual love.

I especially liked the idea of having Humbert address the reader as if they were the jury of his trail, a nice touch.

I read the first part of it but had to put it down because of my life's schedule. Damn good book. "Humbert Humbert" has quite a philosophy on "nymphets." But "Mcfate" gave him a cruel hand.

My question is, who was the antagonist? Lolita or Humbert? While Humbert did what most would call evil you must remember, She seduced him. He loved her and she used him to get what she wanted then left him for a child porn director

I guess that is what we are supposed to determine while reading the book. Was he seduced by this girl into acting on his lust? Can a girl of that age seduce a grown man? I mean obviously she can physically but does she really know what she is doing? Was it his responsibility as an adult to stop it? What was her mother's role in what happened? It raises important moral questions while also being an entertaining read.
