Can anybody tell a little about it? I've heard very positive things about it. In your opinion, is it the closest we have come to Communism?

No, it is not the closest thing to a communism, communism is a classless society. It is possible to have one; the Paris Commune is the first succesful dictatorship of the proletariat.

I doubt you can even call it a success because it did not last long enough to be compairable to any other system of government.

I wouldn't of thought this was the case. The lack of organisation of the Communards was their eventual downfall. No effective militias or defensive plans allowed the Capitalists to walk all over them.
