You're right, the UK economy is in a bad way at the moment too. Far too much regulation and assistance to business. But still it isn't nearing the levels of corruption in the US, the free market principle thanks to people such as Thatcher is at least in part in effect here. In the US I believe it is almost gone entirely, far too many oligopolies and monopolies, too unflexible a labour force, too much corporate welfare, and so on.
I'm not commenting on the people, I'm commenting on how poor a job the country is doing of achieving free market conditions. That is why it suprises me that people are patriotic to the US, its quite an embarrassment that they, such an economic power, really has quite a backwards economic system.

Currently we have a renewed ideological consensus over here. In contrast to the last one (after WW2), today, all the major parties advocate free-market policies. With powerful pressure groups such as the CBI there really is little alternative.

Government upholds tight immigration laws, this too works against the free market, it makes the labour market less flexible. The current governments advocate and use protectionism in international trade, putting tarrifs on imports and assisting those who export, which hinders economic growth worldwide. They are too soft on collusion and monopolistic action, which is the opposite of what the free market aims to achieve(perfect competition). They allow corporations to grow so big that they influence the publics opinion - through allowing corporate funding of political parties, and corporate media. Both distorting the consumers perception on products and preventing perfect knowledge on products. There is a lucrative social security system, encouraging unemployment. There is publically owned industries, and those so regulated that few firms ever enter the market.

Edit: also: the minimum wage, the labour market equivolent of a firm price-fixing. Taxation, far too high, removing the incentive to improve. Equal rights measures not enforced well enough, meaning that on the supply-side firms may not employ those the best for the job(causing inefficiancy), and on the demand side it means that entire groups of consumers are ignored.
So no, I disagree, the mainstream parties in Europe and the US are not free market. The closet there is in politics to such parties is the UK independance party, or the US libertarian parties.

Unlike Che however, Thatcher was hardly revolutionary. Of course, at the time her policies may have seemed something of a &#39;revolution&#39;, though, realistically they were a reactionary.

Thatcher&#39;s New Right and Neo-Liberal ideas were, by and large a product of late 19th, and early 20th century Liberalism. She certainly advocated &#39;laissez faire&#39; government, and believed in &#39;self help&#39;. Though at the time such ideas seemed somewhat &#39;new&#39; and did provoke change, it was a backward, not a forward change. She was essentially reactionary, not revolutionary at all.
