View Full Version : May day!
The Role Of Ideology

I can't believe no one has posted a may day topic yet. Aren't any of you going?
I personally will be going to the big Union march up London, from Clerkenwell to Trafalgar should be an excellent day.
Any excuse to wave around a big red flag really :P.
Matt
I have to go to screening for beach staff (lifeguarding). And a crapload of homework. I wish I were doing something, but not this year :(

I'm working tonight, and I don't think there's a march going on here anyway, so even if I was awake (which I won't be) I don't think there's anywhere for me to be :(
I'd love to head to Glasgow and join in - simply not feasible this year

There is no May Day march where I live, unfortunatly but I hope those going today have a good time. I've read though, that there will be a heavy police presence in Dublin. While 81 have already been arrested in Berlin and 58 police officers being injured. Where will the largest march be ?

Hmm not much happening here either. But on the topic of mayday, my friends are convinced may day is on monday (which i know it is) but how I tried explain to them that the official mayday is the 1st of may and they just called me stubborn! Anyone know where i can get concrete evidence to shut them up?

Ah, I didn't have the chance to check this thread before I left but otherwise yeah.
I marched with the YCL until I got to trafalgar square, then I went around the book stalls for a while. I picked up 'Proletarian revolution and the renegade Kautsky' by Lenin and then a book called 'the red army' from the Marxist.org stalls.
After that I joined the contingeant on Nelson's column and sat on the lion for the speeches, draping a hammer and sickle flag over it.
Maybe we can all play videogames tomorow in celebration.
If you want, it helps me to relax. I'm sure it is the same for others.

Indeed, this forum is a wasteland today, as the commies rise up with the help of the masses to overthrow the evil rich.
Oh wait...
Maynard,
Your right about the heavy police presense in Dublin. Half the police force of the country was on duty, all leave cancelled and the 2500 soldiers brought in to back them up. Today was the first time water cannons were used in the history of the Irish state. Completely unprovoked and hopefully should be shown in the media, as there were numerous press photographers there, who were actually the first people to be water cannoned off a wall. I left early, but the last I heard was that 25 people were arrested, all British and my brother tells me that the police were chasing people back into the city. I'll let you now more if I hear.
Surely all those who were there took lots and lots of pictures for us to see right?
there was no May-day march where i live too.all i did was wearing guerilla-labor clothes at the university and posting some messages to some friends :(

Says 2000 and then later on says 600, nearer to 700/800 I would have thought but it was hard to gauge cause everyone was scattered and I left before everyone has reassembled to move back to the city centre.

More will probably appear throughout the day. Unfortunately my camera batteries had pretty much gone by that time, so I only managed to get a few pictures of the cannons and demo at this stage and I don't know how they've turned out yet. I'll post them if they're any good.

"This revolution will leave a lasting mark in world history and has nothing to be ashamed of," Castro said at a massive May Day rally in Havana's Revolution Square.

"To those who persist in destroying the Revolution, in the name of the immense multitude gathered here, I truly say to them, as at other decisive moments of our struggle: 'Long Live Socialism', 'Fatherland or Death,' 'Venceremos' (We shall overcome)," Castro said in closing his speech.

The biggest attraction in may day is that there's always a weird guy with Stalin's picture on his hat or shirt, and like every year we had one this time... hilarious!
