Secret Service questions student on drawings

If this 15-year-old kid in Prosser is perceived as a threat to the president, then we are living in '1984.'
-- Kevin Cravens, friend of the unidentified boy's family
PROSSER, Washington (AP) -- Secret Service agents questioned a high school student about anti-war drawings he did for an art class, one of which depicted President Bush's head on a stick.
Another pencil-and-ink drawing portrayed Bush as a devil launching a missile, with a caption reading "End the war -- on terrorism."
The 15-year-old boy's art teacher at Prosser High School turned the drawings over to school administrators, who notified police, who called the Secret Service.
"We involve the police anytime we have a concern," Prosser Superintendent Ray Tolcacher told the Tri-City Herald newspaper.
Secret Service agents interviewed the boy last Friday. The student, who was not arrested, has not been identified.
The school district disciplined him, but district officials refused to say what the punishment was. Tolcacher said the boy was not suspended.
The artwork was apparently part of an assignment to keep a notebook of drawings, according to Kevin Cravens, a friend of the boy's family.
The drawing that drew the most notice showed a man in what appeared to be Middle Eastern-style clothing, holding a rifle. He was also holding a stick with an oversize head of the president on it.
The student said the head was enlarged because it was intended to be an effigy, Cravens said. The caption called for an end to the war in Iraq.
A message left by The Associated Press with an after-hours duty officer with the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., was not immediately returned on Monday.
"If this 15-year-old kid in Prosser is perceived as a threat to the president, then we are living in '1984'," Cravens said.
Tolcacher insisted it was not a freedom of speech issue, but a concern over the depiction of violence.
"From what I saw, [school officials] were right to be concerned," Prosser Police Chief Win Taylor said.

It doesn't matter if you are a right winger or leftist, the fact that the secret service was called shows misappropriation of manpower and wasted time of the secret sevice....the kid's 15, and he drew the pictures, it's not like it was graffiti on a wall or a death threat.

That how everyone starts
First you draw then you think a lot and
then one fine day u do it
People just dont sleep one night and get up
another day as
murderers
The transformation is gradual and slow
Anyway I wouldn't mind seeing bush's head on a stick
atleast there would be some symmetry
Because right now his head is too small for his human body.
This anamoly is because he has a small skull and a smaller brain.

hey,
Do you have a way to get those pictiures ?

Actually I find most psychotic killers don't do drawings of what they are about to do. The tend to just snap and stick a pair of scissors into someone's cranium.
Do you have a way to get those pictiures ?
Yeah, I need a new poster for my wall.

Please, you are all over reacting.
The problem is the school's zero tolerance rules, not the secret service.
They called the police, who then called the Secret Service. The secret service investigated as they should have, and decided it was nothing.

The transformation is gradual and slow
You can't gradually become a murder! You're a non-murderer, then you kill someone, and are instantly a murderer.
By the way, I once got suspended from highschool for writing some ambiguously pro-war material (and there wasn't any war at the time), so it goes both ways.

The action of murdering is fast
but
The change start s first on your mental plane.
you can commit murder only if you think of murder first
Whats on the inside manifests itself on the outside

I didn't see you complaining when people compared Hitler to Saddam, or Osama or Stalin.
It's not only an overreaction from the school, but also from the police. Who has called in the Secret Service. But the fact that the Secret Service can be called in for a drawing, shows the increasing control of the state. It kinda reminds me of 1930 USSR under Stalin.

The SS job is to protect the president, and investigate economic crimes.
The police erred on the side of caution, and called the SS.
The SS decided it was not a threat.
The only party at fault here is the school.

Yes, and the NKVDs job was to protect the revolution.
They really investigate economic crimes? What does that entail, exactly?

They are run by the dept of treasury.
The guy who works across the street from my dad stole money from clients, and the SS came and took his records and stuff.

Lucid, if you don't think Bush is Hitler, then you are ignorant. The Patriot Act, the War in Iraq, and many other things, these are all signs that what happened to Germany is going to happen to America, a slow-moving slide to a Nazi America.

Read the damn article.
The SS DID NOTHING.
Was he arrested? Charged? Incarcerated?
NO
The ONLY punishment was given by the SCHOOL. Not the police, not the SS, the SCHOOL.

Give me a break. Do you actually think they're gonna let him get away with something like that? Because of that they'll always track his ass and always moniter every little thing he does. Why else do you think they passed the PATRIOT act, started up the office of homeland security, etc.??

I agree, the SS didn't do anything wrong, this is resorting into a bit of an argument about if we should have SS or not <_<
The school system you guys have is so amazingly intolerant. I wrote plenty of essays that were somewhat risky when I was at school - never was I brought up on it. But then we don't have patriots really over here anymore - just the monarchists and imperialists.

Yes.
No matter what fucking laws are passed, they do not have the manpower to track and moniter every single person in the entire damn world.

Realistically though, the kid will now have a file. If ever it's found that he joins an extremist group, or one that is viewed as such by the current regime, they may well succeed in catching up with him.

Or do the laws not apply to minors? Can they kill, steal and burn down buildings? Or are they arrested for that?

I apologise for not making my inital post clearer, as this statement isn't really relevant.
The kid will now have a record held on him simply because he drew a picture that was viewed unfavourably. He has now been pegged as someone who may in the future cause trouble - after all, this is why the SS exist - and as such they will no doubt check up on his actions or movements from time to time, despite the fact that all he has done is drawn a picture. Hardly criminal activity now, is it?

From the feeling of the article, I feel that the SS decided it was a false alarm.
We need more info.
But we can all agree that the school overreacted, right?

You're damn right they did - the SS have done nothing wrong here, they were asked to investigate and did (arguments about their existence aside). After deciding it was nothing they just dropped it.
But in 10 years time this kid will be, what 25? something like that. It could be totally different people involved in the SS at that time and he could end up in a bit of a pickle over it
It's entirely the schools fault. Granted the kid probably should have known a little better than to do that kind of thing in a school in the USA - after all being unpatriotic seems to make you a traitor over there.

yeah, i hate the school system. this isn't terribly relavent, and involves different surcumstances, but i recently got suspended for opposing the schools heirachy.
let me set the scene, its between classes, and me and a couple comrades were having a hacky-sac session. some stupid neo-con teaher comes out of her office and says that hacky-sacs are not allowed in school. so we feign defeat, and wait till she turns the corner. after she is out of sight, we restart the hack. then, and this is what i find extremly manipulative and vile, she comes back to check if we acually stopped. so, then she snatches the hacky-sac straigt from my hand and walks away. so i follow her to get it back, because in my mind, theivery is theivery, regardless of her professorship. then she refuses to return the hacky-sac, and the bell rings. now i am late, and without a hacky-sac. as i turn to return to my class i let out a cuss. so this teacher decides to report me to the principal, and i am suspended. this is ridiculous, because i saw my self as justified in my actions. the principal suspended me before letting me explain my actions, which is the biggest piss off.
i'm telling you; this is a police state. whether it is the SS shaking you down about a drawing, or a student opossing the authority that the schoolastic heirarchy gives to teachers.
