I dont know if you people have noticed it...but many people are feeling "unsafe", people steal, rape and murder more than they did before, or so they say.

-The government places cameras everywhere, the streets are filled with cops and security people.
-The concept of free speech and press are being ignored, I tried to get Guerilla Warfare by Che Guevara, but the bookstore told me they dont sell it anymore since september 11.
-People who didnt go mourning for the victims of september 11 were being written down on a paper at schools.
-People are no longer allowed to stand with more than 2 people together or we will be split up by the police...

What is this, sounds kinda regime like to me...and what is it...yes Dutch democracy

What do you think of all this, are you starting to get 1984 (that book by George Orwell) visions of where you live?

What we see today is certainly not comparable to the depictions of the world in '1984', but I certainly know what you mean.

Here in the UK Blunkett's new wave of legislation is set to make our country much more akin to 1984.

This involves:

- Increased propagation of CCTV cameras

-Identification cards

-Imprisonment for increased periods of time, without trial.

-The prospect of being imprisoned for something you might have done, with little evidence to suggest so.

All in the name of freedom! :D

how are identification cards 1984 esque? They have been around for a long time, I am pretty sure you need a license to drive in Europe as you do here in the United States and those have your info on them

and its GEORGE ORWELL not John

Hey look on the bright side, if you're feeling kind of stressed out from living in your city with all of its tight government control at least you can leave and go
into the country for some peace and relaxation or leave your country all together, this is just a few ways to revive your free will!

but ya your right, things do look a little like the progression toward a "1984" type future! ;)

peace yall

Admittedly they're hardly as extreme as any of the measures taken to invade personal privacy depicted in 1984.

They are however a "step in that direction", in that they further infringe upon personal privacy, the state having all of your details "at hand". Of course, they already have most of our details, though we're not required to carry them round on a card at all times.

Of course it's arguable that such measures are for the "greater good".

Actually it's Eric Blair... :P

yea just last week me and my friends were standing outside a pool hall at like 9 o'clock and these two pigs came up and asked us a slew of questions, literally.
they included:
-why are you guys here?
-how long are you gonna play pool for?
-what time are you going home?
-how did you get here?
-how old are you?
i dont trust the system - thats why i learn its loopholes ;). i know that under the canadian charter, pigs dont have any right to stop you on the street and ask for i.d or any kind of personal information.... but i mean if they get someone who doesnt know their rights, and they get answers out of em, they are literally breaking federal law. yet they still walk around and do it. all in the name of "protecting the public" and "freedom".

my bad..I just havent slept in ages

But ok here we are goin in the direction of the police having more and more power, the government wanting a bigger role in the upbringing of children, teach us about morals and values in an extreme matter...

Claiming lots of non conformist stuff to be terrorist, for example now they claim that buildings that have been squatted are the breeding ground for terrorism...

Buildings are being squatted here because there are no cheap houses for young people to live in, it's because the government let big building companies sell expensive houses only...

And breeding ground for terrorism?

I know, that was so fucked up, I might be able to get it from the black market, but still..how pathetic is that, that I cant get a book because it "might" encourage me to terrorism...come on!

There is far too much crime. And it is right that certain crimes have increased in frequency. I think this is because our conscience has changed in the last 30-40 years. Our socities have become more individualist and the gap between rich and poor has grown. Sense of society and community has deteriorated.

I think to reduce this crime society needs to fundamentally change culture. I am not worried about 1984 style techniques in reducing crime, however I do not think that it will work.

It's not exactly a negative utopia, but it has the leanings of one. Speaking of the list of people who get written up for not mourning September 11th...on the 2 year anniversary of it this year in school, the principal came on the announcements and said "please remain respectful so we can celebrate september 11th." everybody was shocked. The man certainly doesn't know how to choose his words.

Anyway with the recent upsurge of activity and talk about the patriot act, there will definitely be less freedom, even moreso than before.

They've probably got files on us because we visit this and many other leftist sites.

I can't decide if ID cards are good or not. Was watching the news last night and I was thinking 'invasion of privacy? Protection?' I just don't know. I suppose if you don't do anything wrong or if you believe in everything you do and don't mind the consequences its not going to change anything because you have nothing to hide. And obviously the consequences are not going to be of the severity of 1984.

... Thinking that i don't know what my biggest fear is...
