Today, Okinawa is Where America's East Asia bases are stationed.
The People of Okinawa have their own unique culture, Language,
and Traditions. The Thing is the Okinawans know barely about their
culture and Some do not even know at all.

Okinawa was usually for most of it's History a Independent
Country. and Okinawa (while it was independent) was called
the "Ryukyu Kingdom" and it was a major trading port and
was a place where Cultural Diffusion Occured. Okinawa
is also the Place where Karate was Originally Developed.

But in 1879 - The Imperialist Japanese Government Took
over or Annexed the Ryukyu Islands and oppressed the
People of those islands. The Imperialist Japanese Punished
Okinawans for Speaking the Okinawan Language even
amongst themselves. They were force to live in crowed
areas of Okinawa and Surpressed Ryukyuan Identity.

In 1945 - America Estabilished Bases on Okinawa
For Japan's Security Alliance. And America Rlued
Okinawa for 27 Years. America pretty much did
the Same thing to Okinawa What Japan Was doing
them [Okinawa] in 1879. In 1972 - Okinawa was Reversed
Back to Japan based on the Promise of Removing the
Bases.

Today - The U.S Bases are still there, The Okinawan
People do not know who they are (Due to Japanese
and American Oppression of Okinawa), And Japan
and America uses it to "Protect" East Asia..... Japan
nor America does'nt give a fuck about the Okinawan
People.

Part II - Possibilities for the Future of Okinawa

Independence - This may be the Only way of Solving the Problems
Okinawa is having (U.S Bases, Land Erosion, Cultural Deteriation) and it
would allow the People to learn About their Heritage and to improve
themselves as a people.

Socialism is a Approach Okinawans might use To Reform Okinawa as a
Independent nation - it would remove or Take Over the US Bases and replace
them with Land reform and it would make the now falling Okinawan Industry
Nationalized and would improve the education of their people and etc.

That's a possibility -

Right now there are People in Okinawa that Support A Independent Okinawan
Nation but they Have Little or no Support from their own people. That is Because
most Okinawans are Unaware of their Heritage and they think that they are Japanese themselves - But the Truth is that - They are Not Japanese - they
are a people Who is being Occupied Directly by Tokyo and indirectly by
Washington D.C. Because of the Bases.

Okinawa Should be independent and Secede, Other than being the Poorest Prefecture In Japan.

The Only Problems with that is:

A independent Okinawa would Scare America Because it would Call for the
Removal of the Current US Bases now there, and it would Hamper US Influence
in East Asia if the Bases were removed. It Would also put Japan's Security
in danger because with the Bases gone - there would be no suitable way
for the US-Japan alliance to Continue and there Would be no easily accessible
way for america to defend Japan.

Sorry, i don't see the US, or Japan for that matter, allowing such a thing to ever happen....unfortunately.

Plus another problem is that their culture has been destroyed for how long? 100 plus years.

The elders are gone, and all the people know about their past now is stories and etc. They have no feeling of wishing to be independent and free of control. It is all they have ever known. Revolutionaries can only do so much, but it is up to the people to believe.

Just like in Capitalistic countries, the people are too content to shift gears midway...

An independent Okinawa looks impossible to achieve, and also considering many Okinawans consider themselves as Japanese, is there a real need for a seperate state?

The Present Economical Situation Calls for a independent Okinawan State. It's
the Poorest Prefecture in Japan.

Create an independent state of Okinawa simply because its not well-off by Japanese standards? thats a foolish thing to say.

I aggree that if the Okinawans want an independent state then they should be allowed to create it, especially if it is not doing well within the Japanese structure.

Is there any way that we can get an actual Okinawan to post his opinion here? Maybe a nationalistic one.

I had never heard of Okinawa before, sounds interesting but they're culture has been destroyed and It doesn't seem like it's coming back anytime soon.

There May be Some truth to that - But Many Okinawans are beginning to develop a National Identity. the Japanese Media is trying to keep Ryukyuan Seperatists
from reaching people who might support their message. I think with the situation in the world right now is going to change that and give The Seperatists an oppertunity.
