Aznar's Partido Popular (the right wing conservative incumbent party) had a 2/3rds lead in the polls before March 11. The elections were March 15 and the Socialists got in.

This is slightly tenuous but on closer examination I can see justification for the Spaniards' voting. Aznar immediately blamed ETA for March 11 without providing any evidence of it. About 2 days later something around 8 million Spaniards marched on the streets of their cities, condemning the operation and calling for answers. By this juncture, it was becoming clear that fundamentalist Muslims were behind the attack, yet Aznar was still attempting to point the finger at ETA. Bearing in mind that around 93% of Spain was against its involvement in Iraq, they now decided to vote for Zapatero's Socialists, who promised the removal of Spanish troops from Iraq. I think this is about as fair a result as we can hope for with representative democracy, even if it did take a tragedy for it to happen.

Please stop referring to PSOE as Socialist, they are far from it.

Well the Americans have their loyal British and Dutch lapdogs left as western European pets...
