I don't know if I can do this either.
Think about like this if it helps: Try to find your single favourite song, and choose 5 contenders for that spot.
Layla - Clapton
When the Levee Breaks - Zeppelin
The Changeling - Doors
Hey You - Pink Floyd
All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix

New Noise - Refused
Where is my mind - the pixies
epic problem (i think) - fugazi
shy - ani difranco
negative creep - nirvana (i'm actually only heard the original once)
But it'll probably change as soon as I buy a new CD.

Know Your Enemy
Rage against the Machine
The ultimate tell-it-like-it-is song.
Bulls on Parade
Rage Against the Machine
Outlining America's social structure.
Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden
I can relate to that song
Purple Rain
Prince and the Revolution
Guitars, a piano, and extremely apologetic lyrics; this makes a great atonement song. I have trouble thinking of this song outside the context of the namesake movie.
Baby, I'm a Star
Prince and the Revolution
Prince's song of gratification and pride.

I really want to just start listing songs, but I know I need to narrow it down. I will name 5 GOOD songs. I can't say favorite
"Bullet with Butterfly Wings" - Smashing Pumpkins. Shows angst and the feeling of not winning, despite trying "...despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage..."
"Born in the USA" - Springsteen. This song is very anti-war, and actually criticizes the Vietnam war, and how we (the government and business) treated soldiers when they came back.
"Testify" - RATM. Brings up how the media shows events in a warm light, often taking the bloodshed out of an otherwise bloody event.
"Chop Suey!" - System of a Down. About addiction, and suicide. It brings up Christ's death, and shows how we see his death today, in society.
Optional, open to anything - "Boom!", "Bombtrack", "Killing in the Name", "Ghost of Tom Joad", "ADD", "Marijuana"(by Phish), anything goes in my 5th spot.

wait, somebody who quotes Edward Abbey and admits publically to listening to Principal Leonard Skinner?
I must be dreaming, that's fucking awesome.
I would suggest a more diddley-fied avatar, that one just creeps me out.

LOL!
That's pretty good, Rasta. Most lefties won't admit to listening to ol' southern rock, that's true. But for good reason too, because most people who listen to that stufgf are fucking crazy.

Nirvana - You Know You're Right
how can you say that. its not right, its a good song but how can you favour it over come as you are and smells like teen spirit, this song shouldn't of been released it is an insult to Kurt to say that this song is your favourite
Timon of Athens

This is harder than the guitarists question... well, here goes:
1. All Along the Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
It's tough enough to do a good Dylan cover. Hendrix just went above and beyond
2. Like a Rolling Stone- Bob Dylan
The anthem of a generation. It's one of those songs that will just endure forever because its message is timeless
3. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds- The Beatles
It's just so out there...
4. With God on Our Side- Bob Dylan
Bob did find religion for awhile, but that's not what this is about. It's actually a heavily sarcastic attack on the blindness of the government.
5. The Times, They are A-Changin'- Bob Dylan
Sorry for all the Dylan songs... There are so many other songs I'd love to put on here, but these are all really good.. Albums would be easier.
