When I was younger, I was a vegetarian, and recently have gone back to being one again. I've never really studied being vegetarian, but feel that killing animals as a means of survival is barbarric. Are there good books on being vegetarian?

I do believe this belongs in the Literature & Films forum.

Where is a mod when you need one?

Although, there so many threads on vegetarianism in this forum as it is....

I am a vegan and have been one for a year. Vegans are better than vegetarians because they avoid all animal products. I congratulate you on you becoming a vegetarian.

Books:

Animal Liberation by Peter Singer

-This one is a must-have-

Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz
- Reveals horrible cruelty in the meat industry-

The Pig Who Sang to The Moon by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson
- Reveals the unexpected intelligence, emotions, and feelings of farm animals-

Can't think of any more at the moment

Videos:

Meet Your Meat - Available to view online at

Meet Your Meat (http://www.meetyourmeat.com)

Chew On This - Available to view at GoVeg.com (http://www.goveg.com)

Websites:

GoVeg.com (http://www.goveg.com)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (http://www.peta.org)

Vegan Action (http://www.vegan.org)

The Vegan Society (http://www.vegansociety.com)

VegWeb (http://www.vegweb.com)

Hope this helps, good luck with being a vegetarian!

I believe vegetarianism to be the next logical step before hitting veganism. I've been 1 (vegetarian) for almost (if not) 6 months now.
i have to confess not having made not much research about the subject in the past, and things are looking quite confusing nowadays. I can't really pinpoint whether it's the meat temptation coming back to me (haven't craved it since the first weeks) or just questionning on the whole matter, all over again.
it's sad to admit, but sometimes i think i'm just stuck in the vegetarian state of mind for some odd irrationnal unspoken truth.

meh, it's just one of those days, as Sizzla would sing, where nothing makes much sense and you go on with your day trying to avoid any thinking about it.

Thanks for the links OverthrowtheGovt16, i'll try to have a look at them later on after work...

Speaking of which, i should probably get going... the weekend's over unfortunately........

Peace out,

Honestly I sometimes feel bad about eating meat, but only because some animals have to live in such bad conditions. If the animals had good conditions I would have no problems with it.

I believe this to be false. Over time our kanine teeth have been getting smaller (my family the exception :D ) as a species - this would tend to point to the fact that we are in fact becoming more of a herbivore than an omnivore.

Both these simply suggest that we should be more careful about what we do eat. Neither, as you assert them (I have not read them so cannot comment on the prose itself) points to veggie=good, carni=bad

please not another meat is evil thread

Well (and we've all heard it before) plants are alive too, so in effect eating meat cannot be evil. Simply continuing your existence is the evil. The question is do you consider it a necessary evil, and do you justify your existence by trying to be a better person?

Indeed.

The next logical step from not eating any animal products is being a breatharian (sp?)

I rarely eat meat now, but not because I believe it is evil to kill animals, but for economic reasons alone. A good book is Recipes for a Small Planet by Ellen Buchman Ewald. It takes traditional recipes (in most cases) and makes them better, using what is in Diet for a Small Planet, though I have never seen this book (Diet ...).
