as in are they leftist, i am a huge fan and have never untill today even have the idea in my head, but they have done alot to persuade me
for example:
the video for Jeremy where there is a class of students doing a nazi salute infront of an american flag
and also there war against ticketmaster
and also there accoustic set, the unpluggged one where he starts standing on the chair and rights "pro choice" on his arm
so that is my question, perhaps arguement, so i am hoping for some feedback on this, thankyou

Ive heard that Eddie Vedder has ties to MoveOn.org (he was a Judge in the "Bush in 30 Seconds" Video Contest) , so he definately isn't Republican.
I think he is rather Leftist, at least a Social Democrat. His "Do the Evolution" song and Video does seem political.

he was also a big Nader booster in 2000
Pearl Jam are definitely leftists. They are also very political. I remember one concert where eddie said "I just think a woman should be able to get a fuckin' abortion" ....I also remember him writing "pro-choice" on his arm during a tv performance I believe.
Not to mention their anti-war stance.
They also took on ticket master because of the high prices they charged. They strive to keep prices down on their cds and dvds also.
they also stopped doing music videos etc...

When they toured Australia last Eddie Vedder said to the crowd "John Howard is sucking George Bush's dick at your expense!' and things like that.

They're probably not conciously fully leftist, but they know what they'll stand for and what they won't, and they won't stand for corporate shite. (Pearl Jam are my ultimate idols :D :D :D )

Well, they aren't leftists in our sense of the word, they are democrats.
I won't comment on Pearl Jam for fear of pissing everyone off.

I like some pearl jam's newer songs, the first single off their newest album was great, i forget the name though.
"I am Mine"
Their song off their new album Riot Act, called "Bushleaguer" is great too.
When they perform it live, Eddie comes on stage wearing a suit and a bush mask. He dances around, puts the mask on the mic stand and messes around with it and sometimes stomps on it. Great stuff.
They are awesome live.

Right now, does it matter?

Yes. I mean, I am all for picking a lesser of two evils and having the Dems in power, but it still matters very much. Democrats are Republican lite, they are not much better. History has shown us that Democrats are only very slightly better than Republicans.
And everyone in Seattle hates Eddie Vedder, I had to get that out.
They aren't dems. And I seriously doubt that everybody in Seattle hates Eddie. I can't even fathom of a reason why. His politics?

ok i see that there is not really any similarity between anyones posts so, can we agree on that they do not have any real political views/stance, well none that are really evident, but they are instead just rebeling in the name of the people where they are being used i suppose by higher authority, perhaps?

Yes, they are. Eddie Vedder has made numerous statements saying vote Dem to get Bush out. They are as liberal as they come.
And yes, they get no respect in Seattle whatsoever. There are alot of reason. Vedder, in many ways, tried to exploit the fact that they were a "Seattle band" in the the early 90's gain more success. He tried to suck up to Kurt Cobain after Nirvana exploded, this coming after he shit talked them for 3 years prior. He tried to act like they were great friends, despite the fact that Cobain went on record saying he loathed Eddie Vedder and everything he was about. There are alot of reason, but people in Seattle really don't respect Pearl Jam like they do Nirvana or Soundgarden.

but nirvana went on tour with Pearl Jam and also Red Hot Chili Pepper's, and i know this wasnt for money or anything, kurt wont take any shit, he was once offered the oppertunity to go on tour with metallica and Guns n' Roses, his reply that he would love to go on tour with metallica anywhere in the world but he would never step out onto the same stage as Axl Rose as long as he would live

They have a genuine disdain for Bush (like most of us). They don't want him in office. If that makes them "dems" okay. I still don't think that is the case. Looking back at what they have done, outside of the recording industry, they have done more for the left than I, and most people on this board, have ever done.
Nirvana (kurt) were bitter that Pearl Jam's album outsold them. There was a lot of friction between the two. I don't think pearl jam were exploiting the seattle scene, there were tons of other bands and record comapnies that were.
In the end, Pearl jam is more of a "seattle band" than Nirvana was. Whatever that's worth.
From what I've seen from their Seattle concerts, they get plenty of respect. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were simpatico.

That's ridiculous. Where did you get this from ? For one, there is no way in hell Kurt Cobain let money get to him like that. This is the guy that bought a Mercedes, and felt stupid having it and took it back for his old cheap piece of shit. Two, I'm pretty sure Pearl Jam never outsold Nirvana while Kurt was alive.

Again, where are you getting this from ? Do you know where the guys from Pearl Jam are from ? Eddie Vedder is a jock from San Diego, Jeff Ament is from Montana. People respect Ament and Stone Gossard, they were around the Seattle scene for years, they were in one of the first "grunge" bands ever, Green River, and later Mother Love Bone. How is Pearl Jam more of a Seattle band than Nirvana ? What does that even mean ? The fact is, ten years after the guy's death people are still seriously into Nirvana, and not just in Seattle. The only people that listen to Pearl Jam in Seattle are yuppies from Bellevue. That's cool to like them, I'm not saying their music sucks, I'm just telling you how it is around here and how I feel about them. I despise Pearl Jam.

It wasn't about money, but the fans. More people were interested in Pearl Jam than Nirvana, even though Pearl Jam wasn't doing music videos (well, just a couple). I'm pretty sure that Ten and VS outsold both Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero (before Kurt's death), I could be wrong though
I know the history behind pearl jam, and where eddie is from. What I meant by "seattle band" for one, was not conforming to industry standards, becoming commercial, or selling-out. For instance, Pearl Jam stopped doing music videos. They too didn't care about the money, but it was the music. Something which has carried on to this day.
I don't have my finger on the pulse of seattle, so I shouldn't claim to know what people there listen too. I just don't believe that people despise Eddie over there, especially because of the rivalry with Kurt.

Bleach was released on Sub Pop and nobody had really heard of Nirvana when it came out. Nothing Pearl Jam did outsold Nevermind and I'm fairly sure the same goes for In Utero.

I never said despise. People just don't really respect Eddie like they do Kurt, Mia Zapata, Mark Arm, King Buzzo, believe it or not, it's true. Pearl Jam are not even considered part of that scene.
Fair enough. But I'm 99.99% positive that "Ten" outsold "Nevermind" in like 1991. And Vs. outold In Utero. I'll look for some sources.

I live in Seattle. I like Pearl Jam more than Nirvana. Alot more, but that doesn't mean I like Eddie Vedder personally.
I can't stand Nirvana. They're like fucking nails on a chalkboard to me. I don't even know why, I just hate the way they sound.
Soundgarden kicked ass, however. Chris Cornell is an excellent singer. I don't know why he went off and joined Audioslave. They really suck.
