Lets make a list of all the sentient and/or beautiful riffs we can.

Obviously (or maybe not so obviously!), Led Zeppelin (AKA The New Yardbirds) rule in this category, but just about every band good and band has drudged a few decent melodies up, right?

The Yardbirds were the masters at "Riff Rock," by the way.

Exactly... it is amazing. Whenever I hear it I can't help but go into a spasmic action that I tell people is the air guitar...

...but people are worried I'm having a seizure.

I think Band of Gypsys fucking amazing album.

Personally I think it rivals Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland which get much more praise.

And Noel Redding is a mediocre bassist next to Billy Cox.
Not to mention that Buddy Miles was not only a great drummer, but also a really good songwritter.

I have never heard Noel Redding or Billy Cox on drums. I think you mean Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles. I must disagree with you, I prefer Mitchell.

Band of Gypsys is indeed an amazing album.

Raging Bull - No actually, that isn't what I meant. I wrote 'drummer' where I meant 'bassist' and 'bassist' where I wrote 'drummer'.

Petey - A riff is not the same thing as a solo. A riff is any guitar part, whether the song features it or not. A solo is the guitar specificaly featured. That's normaly when the guitarist goes wild.

ah, I see. I agree with you then. Billy Cox was the best bass player of those two.

Best riffs?

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing.

You said a guitar riff is when the guitarist goes wild. Normally when i think of the guitarist going wild I think of a solo, not a riff. But I don't really know what you meant.

I'm a fan of Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters, that's not exactly "rock" though.

Id be the same a guitarist on his own per se is a solo, although most are just somebody fucking around with the pentatonic scale, something I do myself.

Good riff - Peace Frog by the Doors for origanility anyway, god bless Robbie Krieger.
