From the moment I read Stupid White Men I knew that Michael Moore was a writer/director who appealed to the demographic which wants to be progressive but cannot stand being unpatriotic (liberals) and at the time I assumed that because of this he would also fail to point out, when talking about America's international relations, U.S. aggressions and foreign interventions. But I was very impressed when I was watching this DVD in a sociology class and there was a video-listing of American interventions played to the tune of Louis Armstrong. Of course there are people who do not even remember seeing this part of the movie, being more focused on the aspects of American life which are depicted that everyone is pretty clear on, but I was very happy that he listed them. I also saw in this movie a side to Marilyn Manson that I would not have thought existed, he seemed to know so much about what was going on in Yugoslavia and was speaking politically when being interviewed by Moore, I knew that he was smart but I did not know that he paid attention to international affairs.
I give this movie three stars for showing and saying things (American interventions and criticizing the bombing of Yugoslavia) which simply do not make it into mainstream America's world-view. But I do not think that I could go up to five stars because the time dedicated to these very important events was minimized. In the case of the interventions he did not even discuss them himself, which would have made a much stronger point. The other star is deducted because he focused more on detailing the obvious rather than giving information on things that a fraction of America's population would have known.

i just recentally so bowling for columbine also.
i thought the film was very well put together. the part of the movie that got me particularlly stirred was when they were talking about the single mother who had to work to jobs and travle hours to get to the rich area to work under the welfare work program. Under communism that would never happen!

Bowling For Columbine was a pretty good documentary, very interesting to people who may be only slightly politicised but are having doubts about the status quo but ultimately Moore will never be progressive enough, he will always put across a liberal view point.
I also saw in this movie a side to Marilyn Manson that I would not have thought existed, he seemed to know so much about what was going on in Yugoslavia and was speaking politically when being interviewed by Moore, I knew that he was smart but I did not know that he paid attention to international affairs.
It is quite a shock. Any interview I've seen with him shows him to be extremely intelligent and aware of what's going on.

Its kind of odd that people can interpret this movie only as an anti-gun movie, but it shows that gun ownership is also very high in Canada, but actual murders are low. I think it shows that the problem is rather the violent mainstream American mentality, going back to the cliche, "Guns don't kill people, people (in this case American people) kill people."

i think thats bullshit, millions of people play violent videos games and watch violent movies and listen to heavy metal and listen to music with violent lyrics which are part of mainstream and dont kill people. I like watching violent movies but that doesnt influence me to go out and cut off my nieghbors ear. Nor does playing Grand Theft Auto for the past several years influenced me to car jack and murder people in my town. so how does mainstream america cause people to be killed?

I wasn't referring to media violence. There is a big difference between fiction and reality.

theres just something about americans which drives them to go krazy and kill, I mean over here in the UK we're some of the sickest people in the world but aside from the gangs in cities most of whom are rascially motivated we have a very low murder rate. Its definatly not your past, I beleive mr moore brings that up in the film so I reckon its just the way americans are brought up. However I can see how the country might drive you insane, hell it did to poor mr Oswald!

I really liked "Bowling for Columbine". Michael Moore made it interesting and funny at the same time. We have so many problems with gun violence, it's kinda pathetic. Here in America we need our guns, though. If they keep passing all these restrictive laws that make it so you have to have your gun locked away and bulletless and etc., what are we gonna do when the time comes that they take away the right to bear arms? What are we gonna do when the government becomes COMPLETELY corrupt and nobody can stop them because they have all the guns and weapons and we are left powerless? What a catch-22.

If I were to think that the government were corrupt then it would imply that i also thought it had the possibility of a good state. Corruption only means that something against the rules is happening; the government follows the rules, most of its politicians (with few exceptions, like Maxine Waters) are simply immoral.
By the way, welcome to Che Lives.
