i saw this a couple of weeks ago with my friend dawn after i learned that my parents were splitting up. between me being depressed and dawn being nice, the guys working there let us into the late show for free. this was an awesome movie. aside from frank thompkins (played by viggo mortensen) being openly a leftist, being openly dismayed at the massacre of wounded knee for which he had unknowingly delivered the orders for (when he went to africa for the great race, instead of flying the american flag he flew the flag of the sioux nation). the scenery was awesome, the characters were all remarkable except for the sheik's daughter with which there were the makings of a fabulous romance but it never fell through probably because it was based on a true story though i'm sure they embellished it. and the horses were FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC. i was in tears about 1/3 of the time but i was just feeling particularly nostalgic and stuff, being a horseperson. nonetheless an incredible story. and the end just sort of broke my heart and made me feel wonderful at the same time. i guess you could call it a feel-good movie but when you've got a notion for the bond between a person and a horse it takes it up a whole other level.
