View Full Version : 2 million Greek workers strike for an 8% pay raise

2 million workers in Athens are striking for an 8% pay increase, this comes after being denied a 3.2% raise. This is particularly troublesome for the government because they were mainly construction workers preparing for the Olympic games. They have already said if the demands aren't met they will strike again, this has the potential to cause some real damage, some of the strikers are city employees and bankers. No suprise, the new conservative government is behind many of the reasons they are striking, preparing a city for the Olympics is expensive, why not make the workers pay for it ?
I think they could demand just about anything and get it, the government is in a very tight spot.

I have constantly had exceptionally elevated hopes for a proletarian revolution in Greece…I do, of course realise I am "jumping the gun'', grandly.
This is sure, I suspect to ''spark" the revolutionary consciousness of the wage-labours of Athens and the surroundings…nonetheless.
I agree in entirety. The government is in ''an tight spot"…thus so, I deduce there demands will be meet, plus more…I hope.
This will be undoubting, a troublesome burden on the Olympic community.

I was saying to my housemate just yesterday that the Greeks could demand a 100% payrise and get it. There is a good chance that the olypmics won't go ahead (not that I'll complain).

If the Olympics don't go ahead it would be the best thing that could happen to Athens. I watched Atlanta boom for a few years, and then everyone was out of a job and the city was a fucking mess as soon as the games were over. Not to mention how bad they fuck the city up for 3 years prior to the games.

They'll go ahead man, the IOC will likely bail them out soon, and charge exhorbitant interest rates on the loan.

well calgary seemed to boom after the olympics.
it will be interesting to see what happens in vancouver regarding the 2010 olympics .... both with regards to cleaning up the downtown eastside (a large concentration of drug addicts, homeless people etc.) etc. it will be interesting to see if the economy out here booms afterwards (like calgary) or falls into debt (like montreal).
we shall see.
and really, the olympics are a very important issue to places..... its really a big deal to host the olympics so i believe that the workers will probably get any demands they want .... of course i don't know any ofthe labour laws in Greece so i don't know how easy or difficult it is to use replacement workers. anyone care to educate me?

Hey! Don't fuck with Montreal!
We may have alot of debt, but it doesn't matter, cause we got the metro! That only got the money it needed cause of Expo '67, which included the Olympics.
The fucking stadium fucked us up, fucking corrupt politicians gave away a shitload of money to friends. It had nothing to do with the actual project, it's just they hired incompetent friends who decided to take half the money and build the stadium on sinking soil
Since then it's cost billions to try to fix the different parts of it, like the roof, that caved in. I say fucking tear down the piece of shit, and expand the metro like mad! That's where Montreal's backbone is.
Its a shame Greece kicked socialists out just a month ago, however, these were no "socialists" and indeed, it doesnt really matter.
The conservative government will just be worse for the workers, increasing the consiousness of the workers. With this happening, all we need is a marxist leadership to be there, visible for the workers, who can see no shade of capitalist change will make a difference, and have to break with the capitalist system
Solidarity with the Greek Strikers!

hEY i never said anything bad about montreal other than the olympics created a hell of a lot of debt rather than profit.
i wouldn't diss montreal.... i LOVE montreal ... in fact i'm going there in may and i can't fucking wait!

what's their pay like now? If they were pissed off enough they should've asked for a slightly bigger raise. Really squeeze the hell out of the government.

I unacquainted with the particulars, but its certain to be "miserable".
What do you mean''slightly"…they should be demanding, for as much as there worth! Without they’re tedious labouring the cooperation’s and the Greece government would not make a solitary cent.
