Saul Williams and Billy Collins are two of my favorites. Both Williams and Collins have spoken and written against the Bush administration, which is pretty tight. Anybody else have a favorite poet?

By slam poetry, do you mean poetry competetion things? If so, I respect you more for knowing about poetry slams. I won my local one. :-D

Nizar Qabbani is one of my favorite poets....his subjects are varied but contain lots of social and political statements. I reccommend "Marginal notes on the chapter of defeat" or "the trilogy of the children of the stones"

Slam Poetry, eh? Never heard it before, but the competition aspect seems unappealing to me.

by slam poetry i mean in your face poetry. its really kinda hard to explain. there are poetry slams that are competitive. its really performance art .....if any of you have ever seen oz you'll understand with the character poet (who in fact is mums). its a million times better hearing the poet than simply reading his work. he's amazing is really all i can say.
