If they are truely a guerilla force then they should use this as the right time to start fighting. What kind of guerilla army backs down and goes out of action as soon as the enemy starts to fight back?
Imagine what the result of the Cuban revolutionary war would have been if the July 26th movement had gone out of action when Batista's forces tried to encircle and advance into the Sierra Maestra.

The sort that have options, they obviously will fight if it comes to it, but why not seek a more diplomatic path to victory?

If I had the money for a plane ticket for a trip to Mexico, I'd definitely got to Chiapas to join the Zapatistas. These are wonderful pictures. It truly makes me feel that it is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. It makes me so proud that my middle name is Zapata. Hell, who knows maybe Emiliano and I are blood-related. Viva Zapata!

Guerilla warfare is a tactic that is used when diplomatic means are exhausted, if diplomicy was an option with the Mexican government then the EZLN would not have been formed in the first place.
If the tactics they use now are to be their standard ones then they would simply be a guerilla sabateurs with the aim of using their acts to change the existing government policy, which is perfectly fine and acceptable. But that does not mean that they are revolutionaries, they should simply mention discussion and symbol making as their policy, rather than letting the world think that they are a revolutionary army.

True, but then again i don't know exactly what diplomatic solutions they have. What exactly do the they have to offer except peace? and i know that peace will not be an option if the government does not agree to the Zaptista terms exactly. Which they wont.
I think it will erupt sooner or later.

why do they cover their faces?
BOZG
25th April 2004, 09:16
I would guess to prevent being identified, so that they can actually pass through Chiapas and its military roadblocks without being arrested.
Interestingly enough, when the media first met Marcos in 1994, they all asked why he would wore a mask. Was it because he was ashamed to show his face? Questions along those lines but when he said he would remove it and went to do so, the reporters shouted at him telling him not to, his mystery would be lost.
I remember reading something a few years back, though I can't confirm how true it is but Marcos said that he wore the mask and that he would never reveal his identity in order not to be made a real hero figure of. Marcos the masked man could be a hero, but the person underneath could disappear without a trace.

25th April 2004, 10:51
That sounds like a good answer, so hes not a hero. Even though i've seen him without his mask anyway :)

The masks tend to serve two functions. The first is two prevent them from being identified, since most of them are just ordinary citizens and have to consider the safety of their families. The second has more of a symbolic tone, covering their faces to show that their struggle is universal, and that they are the same as all other oppressed peoples. Once again, the symbolism outdoes the action
