View Full Version : Laissez-faire to Corporatism

We know that capitalism tries to make as many people as rich as possible. It can accomplish this through corporations, but Adam Smith said that corporations cut down on competition. But how else could corporations get people rich unless it cuts down on competition? It is inevitable that laissez-faire will create corporations, but the 'father of capitalism' says that corporations are bad, so in practice (vis-a-vis U$) it creates only a few corporate giants that rule everything. Is this correct or am I missing something?

If you mean that relatively free competition inevitably gives way to a market dominated by a few big globs of capital, you're right. That is one of the laws of the market: bigger businesses outcompete, and often gobble up, smaller ones. You know how many companies used to make cars in the U.S.? Me neither, but it was a lot more than now.

I disagree with this line, though everything else you've said seems sound.
Like Severian rightly said, large corprations tend to 'gooble up' smaller businesses, and have done, in most Western nations throughout the 20th century. Pehaps the best example of an all dominating corparations is Microsoft, fronted by our good friend Bill Gates.
Corporations are i fact more of an example of ow capitalism serves to make as few people rich as possible. Any self interested businessman will try as hard as he can to get the most capital feasibly possible. It may well be the case that large corparations are an inevitability of capitalism.

It is a logical thing to do in our society. Everybody wants the most money so he can live the best life (I don't say this is true), but also, if you want something to be done you need money. This whole society turns around money ... Is it possible to live in a world without it?
