How do you arrange your CDs, records, cassettes, or MP3s?
What have you found is best way?
I arrange my CDs alphabeticaly according to band name. If I have multiple CDs of the same band, then I arrange those in order of the release date of the record.
It's pretty good, but I'm pondering changing that perhaps If I hear a good suggestion.

They are arranged according to age, and like. If it's a greatest hits, but I love it to death, then it is close to the top, and so on. I also put all burnt cds in the back of my cd album. Really, I am unorganzied, use a better method than mine.

I'm sort of disorganized.
I'll group genres and related items together but that's as close to order as I get.
I used to have my favorite records squeezed into two milk crates. With my eyes closed I could pick out whatever record I wanted. I knew exactly where they were and in what order. My roommate was always amazed.

I do it by genres, or at least what I like the most is in front. I think it goes like Hip Hop, soul, reggae. jazz, punk, metal, then everything else. There's also some Malcolm and Mumia stuff in there.

I arrange them in order of the release year ( not exact date) , and I don't have them in genres.

Well, that doesn't matter, RB.
The bands are arranged albhabeticaly.
Then within each band, they're arranged according to order in which they were released.
So within my Beatles I'd have A Hard Day's Night first, bla bla bla bla, then Let it Be last.

Yes, I know. I saw it after reading it again.
A Hard Day's Night is my earliest Beatles album too. I'm not too keen on their first 3 albums.

Unfortuately mine tend to be strewn around the floor of my house, usually the 'better' ones are nearer to the top of any given pile of 'stuff'.
I'm looking at sorting this out, though seem to lack the self discipline to keep anything organized for a significant period of time.

I have binders of cds that I like, and stacks of cds (mostly burned ones) that are kept in fairly good condition, but that I don't listen to much. However, the ones that I like are kept in binders.

that reminds me, i need to buy another CD rack soon.
I'm a Chili Pepper aficionado, so I have them organized by release date. For the rest of my collection, I have them ordered by the amount of time i listen to each. (stuff i hardly ever listen to is at the bottom of the tower).

Then I've got copied CDs at the bottom of the rack - two per slot because they're skinnier and they won't stay in a slot to themselves. WHY CAN'T ANYONE DESIGN A DECENT CD RACK? IT'S NOT THAT HARD. I've got my records on shelves beside the CD rack, arranged in the same way.
I don't do genres.

All the cds that I listen to are towards the front of my cd case, (I don't keep them in their cases cus I just don't) and all the other ones are out of view towards the back.
And I use a BioHazard cd as a coaster if I'm too lazy to leave my room and get a real one.

I actualy like my CD racks.
I have my amp and CD changer on top of my drawers and a CD spinner next to the two which are stacked. The CD spinner is only about 1 1/2 feet tall, which is good because I have some posters right behing it. It holds 112 cases. The problem is that it's a bit ugly. All the other ones are all contemporary-looking with stainless steel or wood. Mine is cheapo plastic. Oh well...
Then I have a CD tower next to the drawers. And those 2 together manage to accomodate all my CDs.
