can we ever rid the world of racism completely and if so how?

or is racism going to be in existence forever?

Racism hasn't always exhisted, so therefore it won't always exist.

What kind of logic is this?

A fifty or so gram dosage of lead seems to work fairly well. Preferably injected at a high velocity from the nuzzle of a firearm.

Well I suppose it depends on your philosophic views. No doubt a Platonist would say that the Form of racism and the Form of wheel exist beyond time and space. Scientists on the other hand tell us that our Sun has a limited life span, and so maybe there will be an end to both wheels and racism (and probably the human race with them).

I believe that it is. Simply because racist actions and thoughts are a reflection of your enviroment. If no one told you that blacks were lazy, or you grew up around hard working african americans then it wouldn't really be an issue for you now would it?

Granted people will alway notice differences, but negative thoughts and actions based on these differences can be eliminated. Either by chhanging the enviroment or by different races interbreeding(for lack of a better term) so much that we all turn the same shade of gray.

As long as there is ignorance then yes.

As long as someone thinks they are better than anyone else, or as long as someone cant find an actual reason to take action against someone else other than the obious and stupid, yes!

Good question. Unfortunatley i think there will always be a group of people somewhere dehumanizing another by racist names. They should all be "educated" in whatever way possible...those morons only understand violence.

Sadly there are many who have the cancerous disease of rascism in their small brains. It is up to the people who are not so closed-minded to educate these people and make thm realize that their views are completely and totally unacceptable and must be eradicated quickly and permanently.
Ignorance and manipulative idiots on the Right are to blame for rascist violence and language. We must crush it now or else it will divide society if it gets any worse.

yes, oneday it will be solved, education

For a different approach and a philosophical appraoch to this question I recommend you all read Voegelin's The Race Idea.

Then tell me how useful education is.

hey,

I think that racism will always be here : as long as people think ,which they will forever, racism will be here ...i say we get the racist pricks and give them a good wackin' or we could go with drake's idea ; and hunt the bastards down and use our good friend lead.

I hate the term "racism" myself. We should just use the all encompassing word prejudice. The whole concept of race is an 18th century construct based on social systems with no basis in science. The way the word racism/racist is used flippantly or incorrectly drives me insane. If someone says something that is discriminatory against someone who is French, American or Jewish they are not being racist. Their statements are anti-French, but French people are not a race.

I think it is human nature to be suspicious of anything that is foreign to one's experience. To base one's bad experience with a person from one ethnic group and judge all by this one person is generalizing at best and discrimination at worst. It take more work to see beyond the surface and humans are lazy creatures.

Education and being open minded is the best solution.

I think humans will always be racist, until the human race dies off, which it is bound to do at some point. (The human race will not out-live the universe). With the death of the last human brings the death of racism.

You know, what about the story of the ugly duck or what it is in English, who says that animals aren't racists, we once were monkeys, so what about monkeys?

Xvall
2nd April 2004, 01:41
The ugly duckling was a fictional story. If we pay attention to that, we ought be making sure that our cooking utensils don't run away with each other, and that our bovine herds refrain from leaping over satellites orbiting our planet.

forgive me being off-topic, i just thought i should mention the fault in this theory. Naturally i believe in evolution, but we definitely did not come from monkeys. We came from a different genus (i believe it was) of beings. If we came from monkeys, then monkeys would not exist today. This is true because if an animal evolves, the species evolves with it. Sort of hard for me to explain, but you get my drift.

You are in part correct. We COULD have evolved from monkeys however, since a portion of a species can evolve while the rest remain the same way.
However the truth is closer to that we and monkeys share an common anscestor.

On the matter of racism... Racism is biologicly engineerd into the human brain. If we get the technology to remove instinkts then we can remove it, or maybe a slight alteration in the genecode.
However racism isn't as easy as "blacks are stupid" or "jews är greedy". Racism is about shutting the world out, that is, black white and jewish americans can unite against the arabs, because in their mind they are one people, AMERICANS, how they look don't matter, the important thing is the feeling of belonging.
Racism exists among soccer-supporters, and in politics too, even though the word "racism" i sincorrect then, "non-acceptance for outsides is better".

Racism is biologically engineerd into the human brain

This seems an awfully sweeping statement based on opinion more than actual scientific fact.

Unfortunatly you have to subscribe, and that costs, to read the article...
But the main point is that the evolution dosn't like when it's agent are threathened by outsiders, so it has programmed the brain to naturally shun outsiders. Quite logicly actually.

I'd agree with the notion that racism is a natural mechanism in the human brain - a defence mechanism if you will. To specfiy racism alone however would be unfair, as I believe this 'defence mechanism' to naturally question anything and everything that is different.

Before the advent of global exploration, the sight of a person of a different colour, or with significantly different characteristics would have naturally been cause for concern. Just as those with severe disablities were in some societies killed (due to a belief that 'god' had cursed them etc...) so a person of a different colour may have easily been a Daemon from below, or at any rate someone who wanted to kill you for food.

I believe that racism stems from the basic laws of nature. Survival of the fittest. Only now, that we understand far more about ourselves can we actually address the issue of racism and it will be a hard nut to crack to to it being part of our innate defence characteristics.

I hope that made some form of sense

something to bite my teeth into! Just mucking about, cheers anyway for a better explanation Dawood than before. Seems quite logical but also controversial; an interesting theory nonetheless.

Well, using your rediculous generalisation of my statement. If wheels were a boone on the human species, I would try and assure you that humans existed boefore wheels and can also exist without them.

Will racism ever die? A difficult question to answer.

I say no. Racism is caused by fear and ignorance. Fear of the unknown to be precise. In this infinite universe there will always be something for mankind to fear, and so racism will never truly die.

Umoja
5th April 2004, 21:54
Racism has always existed, just not in an insitutionalized form. As long as different groups of people are living together, they can stay a unit if they divide people up by the larger differences before moving to the smaller. I suppose it's part of peoples, and monkeys, clique mindset (meme?).

this to me is true but racism is not the word, natural competitiveness and survival are the links in science it doesn't justify why white hates black or why man prejudices other nations, religions anything. self belief in superioriority is some thing we have inherited from the environment we grow up in.

racism will be severly lessened under communism because of the abolishment of economic and social class ans the abolishment of devisions in labor

If we don't talk about it and treat each other with respect for hunamity that I think that we will at least be one step closer to quality of the masses and of the races ;)

p.s. legalize it!
