;)

This may have been a semi-recent thread? However I haven't seen one lately/nor at all I believe. We needed another heated debate thread in which someone would be left screaming discriminatory comments of which left them restricted... :P

So what exactly are your feelings on Affirmative Action?

Do you agree with AA, and think that it is needed and is a good thing?

Do you think it is needed for minorities to get jobs, whether or not you agree with it?

Or is it a waste? It does nothing, it means nothing, and it is a lame attempt from the Democrats?

Maybe some other thoughts on AA?

I agree with AA for the most part but it shouldn't be limited to race since that isn't the only determining factor in whether somebody is accepted into a college if there is AA for race there should be something for sex, intelligence*mind you I believe there should be more taken into account than just scores on important tests*, people with handicaps, economic status, all of that other stuff

prevention is better than a cure.

Other than it doesnt solve the main problem, which is why the working class cant become successful, what effect does this have on peoples class consiousness?

SlimJim, the prime beneficiaries of Affirmative Action are white women.

Kez, this is a huge problem that many Leftist of Color will bring up. Although the class consciousness is extremely important, racism prevents a truly equitable class consciousness. You can claim that without capitalism, racism won't exist, but it's still rooted deeply into peoples psyches. I'm not particurally clear though because I spent an extra six hours at school.

Well, at this point, it's a necessary evil.

Affirmative Action sucks, in many cases it prevents a person that may be more skilled from getting a job because he isn't a minority. However, if it weren't in place, you would have skilled minorities being denied jobs on a much larger scale.

I don't think there are many people who would want affirmative action in place, however, at this point in our society it's necessary to ensure that people get fair treatment.

AA is really is a toughy. There's lots of good things about it like: hey it gives mexicans and other minorities a boost in getting ahead during college applications and stuff.
For hundreds of years there was AA for rich white males. Hey hey hey look who's running the country today.
This is one kind of chance for minorities rise up. But it gets confusing cus it's kind of reverse discrimination right? And like someone said earlier
in many cases it prevents a person that may be more skilled from getting a job because he isn't a minority
But hey I'm all for it when applying to college. "Hey she's Mexican and she's smart, sort of. Let her in." Well, I wish it could be that simple. But it's not so people lets debate!

Hopefully in a few years/decades/whatever it won't be needed.
Oh man I'm confused.

i think its necassary in society today to prevent oppression of of minorities but oneday it will have to be removed to make it a "free market"

I'm on with the 'necessary evil' theory, though I would personally rather see affirmative action made on the basis of class, rather than gender or nationality.
