Rumsfeld Caught Lying, Yet Again, On "Face the Nation." But This Time, a Journalist Actually Threw It In His Face.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS

Thanks to David Sirota of the Center for American Progress for spotting and forwarding this excerpt in which Rumsfeld is caught in a brazen lie by Bob Schieffer of CBS. Sirota also suggests seeing this [LINK] for further proof of Rumsfeld's lie on "Face the Nation."
Excerpt from "Face the Nation":

SCHIEFFER: Well, let me just ask you this. If they did not have these weapons of mass destruction, though, granted all of that is true, why then did they pose an immediate threat to us, to this country?

Sec. RUMSFELD: Well, you're the--you and a few other critics are the only people I've heard use the phrase `immediate threat.' I didn't. The president didn't. And it's become kind of folklore that that's--that's what's happened. The president went...

SCHIEFFER: You're saying that nobody in the administration said that.

Sec. RUMSFELD: I--I can't speak for nobody--everybody in the administration and say nobody said that.

SCHIEFFER: Vice president didn't say that? The...

Sec. RUMSFELD: Not--if--if you have any citations, I'd like to see 'em.

Mr. FRIEDMAN: We have one here. It says `some have argued that the nu'--this is you speaking--`that the nuclear threat from Iraq is not imminent, that Saddam is at least five to seven years away from having nuclear weapons. I would not be so certain.'

Sec. RUMSFELD: And--and...

Mr. FRIEDMAN: It was close to imminent.

Sec. RUMSFELD: Well, I've--I've tried to be precise, and I've tried to be accurate. I'm s--suppose I've...

Mr. FRIEDMAN: `No terrorist state poses a greater or more immediate threat to the security of our people and the stability of the world and the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.'

Sec. RUMSFELD: Mm-hmm. It--my view of--of the situation was that he--he had--we--we believe, the best intelligence that we had and other countries had and that--that we believed and we still do not know--we will know.

Yeah , you know when ever Rumsfield speaks there will be multiple lies. Reading that, makes me really realise how crap a speaker he really is.

The quote in full went "There are a number of terrorist states pursuing weapons of mass destruction ... but no terrorist state poses a greater or more immediate threat to the security of our people than the regime of Saddam Hussein and Iraq.'' - Rumsfeld, Sept. 19, 2002, Senate Armed Services Committee.

It's true as far as I know, that Bush never uttered those words . He said "The Iraqi regime is a threat of unique urgency." – President Bush, White House Rose Garden, October 2, 2002. Which is the same freaking thing. They of course were trying to make it seem that if we didn't get him now, we would die from his big weapons now. No matter what words were used to do it, the effect was the same. They used the old fear tactic to try and gain support for a war , when the threat was never there.

We had a good discussion, the Foreign Minister and I and the President and I, had a good discussion about the nature of the sanctions -- the fact that the sanctions exist -- not for the purpose of hurting the Iraqi people, but for the purpose of keeping in check Saddam Hussein's ambitions toward developing weapons of mass destruction. We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors. So in effect, our policies have strengthened the security of the neighbors of Iraq...

I don't. Presidents have been caught lying time and time again. I don't like seeing them get caught because I know that only I and a few other people in the nation will actually care, and that everyone else will just let it slide.

Its like a ripple affect, once you lie you won't stop. As for bush and the rest of the administration i'm glad the public is NOW really seeing the reality of this whole "imminent" threat we never really had. I knew all along that Saddam had no threat against us, heck as far as i can remember Saddam wasn't even mentioned at all before 9/11, the dude was just keeping to himself. Bush just wanted an excuse to take action over Saddam. I read a quote yesterday from bush following the 9/11 attacks (its in that book that just came out, forgot who wrote it) it said, "see if you can find out anything of this is tied up to saddam in ANY way". I can clearly see that bush was just worried about getting saddam at whatever cost, even if he had (which he did) lie to the public. :che:
