Has anyone heard of Maroon5? Call me a dirty Clear Channel-supporting capitalist MTV-whore sellout, but I enjoy their music because it is so damn catchy. Same with that Jason Mraz fellow. Also, I have a weakness for cheesy '80s arena rock and "hair metal."
*whew* That was hard.

GAGAHHHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Yeah, you really aren't supposed to like Maroon 5. You dirty Clear Channel-supporting capitalist MTV-whore sellout.
Maroon 5 sucks balls.
To each his own I guess.
I kind of like some 80s arena rock like Styx, Queen, Van Halen... stuff like that. Not that i consider them gulty pelasures.
And I don't go for the hair metal crap.
My guilty pleasures would probably have to be some some southern rock. I sorta like Skynyrd and ZZ Top. I'd also consider Styx a gulty pleasure.

I'm with you on the first two 100%. As for Styx, you can go to hell and die. I'm serious, too.
As for Southern Rock, I'm not sure that's what I'd call "The Top," but oh well. My favorite (and the most advanced) Southern Rock Group is definately the Allman Brothers. When you forget Greg's Cher years, they are pretty cool.
My Guilty pleasure of the week is Blue Oyster Cult.

They fucking rock!
And I like teh Blue Oyster Cult too. Wouldn't consider it a guilty pleasure, though. Why do you consider a guilty pleasure?
As for Styx, you can go to hell and die. I'm serious, too.
This kind of attitude is why I consider Styx a gulty pleasure.
I'd also like to add Aerosmith to my list of gulty pleasures.
I only like a few of their songs from their very early years. The rest I know is total crap.
Deffinitely a guilty pleasure for me.

Flower people don't you cry, it's not too late
It's not too late

To tell you guys the truth, it's a bit trickier for me than i made it seem.
Most music that I listen to and I'm not proud of, I don't mind telling other people.
Styx, for example, I wouldn't mind telling my friends that I like it, but here, on the other hand, I don't openly express my taste for it.
There might be other music that my friends don't care for, but I might talk about liking it here.
Or southern rock, like the Allman Brothers, or Skynyrd, i would never admit to listening to at school among the general student body, but with some southern comrades, I wouldn't mind saying.
Or I can like just about anything at the classic rock forums, those people have the most non-discriminating music tastes ever. They like everything. So I can go there and say that I like anything and not be lynched.
Unfortunately I got thrown out of that place by the fascist administrators who have failed to even return with a reply.
People have posted extremely offensive and misogynistic jokes that site that are acceptable, so I wanted to pull their strings, so I posted some feminist stuff. They found it too controversial and banned me. They didn't even like me to begin with because they know I'm a communist. ...fucking reactionary, cock-sucking, sons of motherfucking *****es!
None of this music, however, that I hide liking from certain people, I am actually guilty for liking.
I never feel bad for liking these sorts of music.
When I come across music that I find kind of catchy, but I know it's of the shittiest quality, I will normally just find something with which to convince myself that it sucks. Then I'll go around belligerently insulting the music like some capitalist hypocrite.

I'm not the only one who does that? Yay! I feel so reassured...
Anyway, I know someone on this board -shifty eyes- so I can't admit to anything too lame.
AHHHHHH YOU'RE WATCHING ME, AREN'T YOU? :o
I guess the music I really like, really appreciate, and never get tired of, is all respectable. Nirvana, some Beatles, Bob Marley, etc. I'm just the kind of person that will hear a piece of crap song on TV or the radio, not bother to turn it off, and get it stuck in my head for its few short weeks or airtime, after which its replaced by another dumb song. Usually these have a simple, but hypnotizing beat... @

There are right wing, sexist idiots on classic rock forums and you are suprised by this?
I would almost think that would be the norm. To be quite honest, in my experience anyway you would seem to be quite an exception for a classic rock fan.
Think about it most classic rock is apolitical so most conservative types can enjoy it becuse the message/lyrics don't conflict with their beliefs/ideologies.
Oh and didn't somebody point out that Eric Clapton's racist sentiments were the inspiration for the whole Rock Against Racism movement in England?

Yeah, CP, I kinda noticed that classic rock fans aren't the most progressive people out there. :(
I asked them about Eric Clapton being a racist and not one of them said that they believed it. Nobody there had even heard of the acusations saying that he was a racist.
Even a leftist member, who doesn't post anything controversial for his own good, said he thought it was false. A lot of people there pointed out the fact that he is a blues artist and has done lots of work with black musicians, so he can't be a racist.
And the rock against racism didn't really give any links to his quote in context, so I'm kinda lost about whether or not he's a racist.
If he is, I'd really hate to buy his music anymore.
If anyone knows anything about Clapton and racism, tell me. :)
EDIT: all the rock against racism website says is
Eric Clapton suggested at a Birmingham concert that Enoch Powell was right, and Britain was ‘overcrowded’. RAR’s founders wrote to the New Musical Express announcing the launch of the organisation.
I'm not sure if he actualy regrets blacks, Irish, Indians, or whatever he mean when he referred to English immigrants. The quote doesn't say much.

How is that racist? Its a geographical fact, we have a population of 60,000,000 living in what is on the grand scheam of things a tiny country. We have a lot of pollution, poverty, our economy is not brilliant and we have an aging population. I think that we in the UK are going to be in trouble within a few decades. I cant see how that fact has any referance to race what so ever, except that it may be an anti-immigrant argument. But its not, its more of a family planning argument. Immigration is a tiny preportion of the UK's population, a few 100,000 a year is not really going to make a vast differance, IMO.
Enoch Powell is an idiot, but he's got it right on this one... just as usual for the entirley wrong reasons.

Found this too:
Dannii's praise for Jean-Marie Le Pen echoes comments made by Eric Clapton in 1976, who supported the racist Tory politician Enoch Powell and called for Kenyan Asians to be "sent home". Clapton's outburst led directly to the formation of Rock Against Racism, a huge popular movement that was instrumental in smashing the National Front in the late 1970s.
Linky (http://www.repeatfanzine.co.uk/Rants/Dannii.htm)
In August 1976, Eric Clapton, the rock guitarist, interrupted a Birmingham concert to make a speech supporting Enoch Powell, the racist Tory MP. The photographer Red Saunders wrote a reply, which was subsequently published in a number of papers including the New Musical Express and Melody Maker. The letter led directly to the formation of Rock Against Racism, 'When we read about Eric Clapton's Birmingham concert when he urged support for Enoch Powell, we nearly puked. Come on Eric... Own up. Half your music is black. You're rock music's biggest colonist... We want to organise a rank and file movement against the racist poison music... P. S. Who shot the Sheriff Eric? It sure as hell wasn't you!' Dave Widgery, Saunders, Roger Huddle and others followed up the letter by organising a series of anti-NF concerts. The message was angry, exciting and compelling, effective at reaching the young. This editorial in the first issue of Temporary Hoardings was RAR's manifesto, 'We want Rebel music, street music. Music that breaks down people's fear of one another. Crisis music. Now music. Music that knows who the real enemy is. Rock against Racism. Love Music Hate Racism.'

My guilty pleasures...
In current rock... Evanescence, Staind, and yes... The Darkness.
I also have a soft spot for some pretty weird new wave stuff... Scatman John, Falco, Wall of Voodoo (big song: "Mexican Radio")... which I am not that guilty about, so long as I do not have to watch their old music videos. That would be torture, just to see their hairdos (or more accurately, hair-don'ts).
I also like some Styx, and I also consider that a guilty pleasure. I love that song, "Mr. Roboto", and I noticed my mom had the CD. I felt too weird to actually go out to the living room and borrow it.
Tatu... they were mentioned earlier... yep, another guilty pleasure of mine. They do definitely sound much better in Russian.
For the record, the following bands mentioned in earlier posts I love and do not consider guilty pleasures: AFI, Blue Oyster Cult, Rancid, Static-X.

I am not eternally opposed to music just because it is pop, even though most pop is clearly shit.
The Darkness are a cartoonish, cheezy, message-less '80s glam rock cliche born 20 years too late... but still... I like them. That, and my girlfriend utterly hates them... makes me hesitate to admit I like them, unless I am with one of my two friends who has also been bitten by the Darkness bug.

I don't think im really embarresed by any of the music I like. I was when I started listening to other stuff than punk and heavy though. But that was probably more because it's hard breaking out of the role you put yourself in by choosing music style when your teen.
In my experience things like that don't really bother you when you get older.
I would be embarresed if I listened to Status Quo though :D

Their lack of a message is found in most bands that I like. And their image, I think, is infinitely better than the excessively serious crap that most rock today is.

Static-X are unbelievable, they are amazing.
A band's politics do not matter though. I think most rappers should be shot, but I'll still listen to them. And my favourite band, Insane Clown Posse, are evangelical Christians.
I'm not sure whether I should be guilty for liking Michael Jackson.

ICP is really whack. I have some friends that are die-hard fans (juggalos I think they are called). And one should never get them started on talking bout ICP because they can go on for hours.
I even think they know every lyric by heart

It depends who you admit it to, I would admit that I listened to Michael Jackson to most people.
Yes, there are a lot of hard core ICP fans, Juggalos. Juggalos were partly blamed for what happened at Woodstock 99'.
ICP are real characters, I could talk about them for some time. Definately an acquired taste for many people though.

Harriet! King Prawn a guilty pleasure, never.
I have afr too many guilty pleasures, though i wouldnt say im embarrassed by many of them
I will join the growing list of people that are admitting still listening to blink 182, that is my worst.
so some of the list goes:
ace of base
maroon 5
that one beyonce tune (although i heard the tune that teh brass sample comes from, SO good)
actaully i think we better stop here, maybe blink isnt my worst when i think about it.

Yeah he won the Mercury Music Award over here, which is about the most serious award there is, but he basically represents the type of person alternative kids/leftists would hate/be threatened by/be comtemptuous of. I think that's real binary stereotyping on the side of Nirvana idiot fans. He's actually pretty insightful.

His album's well good, but I'm not sure if he has the same affect if you're not well acquainted with London "youth culture". While he was breaking, I was going out with a girl who lived in one of the dodgiest parts of London, so I saw kids identical to him on the streets, the bus, the pubs etc etc...and everyone I met knew someone who knew him or one of his mates or his posse or something.

I should make it clear that I don't actually like Styx. I see that it's been decreasing people's trust in my taste, and I can see why. I like only two Styx songs that I can think of: Renegade and I vaguely like Show me the Way. I mean, I don't even own a single Styx album, so stop making me fucking feel guilty for liking two bloody songs. The rest of their stuff is crap and belongs in the thrift shop alongside Foreigner and REO Speedwagon.
I am, however, still 'guilty' for liking those styx songs.
Just thought I'd clear it up a bit.
I'd also like to add Here I go Again by Whitesnake. That's also really the only song by them that I like.
It's kind of hard explaining to people that you're guilty of liking a single song, not the group as a whole....

Guilty pleasures...
First I'll mention what I like, but I feel I get persecuted for:
(here come nu-metal first)
Disturbed
KoRn
I don't get persecuted for liking Tool, APC, Deftones, NIN, Manson, or SOTD though.
(Rap)
Well... all of the rap I like, or used to like i get presecuted for.
Besides the mentioned nu-metal types, only the alternative music I like doesn't get persecuted. Plaese note though, I don't get persecuted by some metal heads I know.
I'll try to throw up some other names:
Wu-Tang Clan (not into them much anymore though)
50 Cent (okay, I only actually like a few songs)
Eminem (I only like The Eminem Show and a few other songs)
Obie Trice (I actually like most of his songs)
Can't think of anything else at the mo.
Wait... when I was younger... (refrain from chocking your computer screen please)
I LIKED HANSON. :o
