View Full Version : Speedy

Is it me, or is everything speeding up in the western world? It seems that everything has to be fast to be appealing these days. Take television for instance. Every channel is full of fast-paced and flashy programmes and adverts. It's all down to the corporations. I read somewhere that firms and businesses are trying to sell things as fast as possible, rapid sales now one of the best routes to profit maximisation. This 'speeding up' concerns me. Is mankind strong enough to live at such a fast pace? Take food. Fast-food joints are taking over, wiping out individual establishments. Ask children what their favourite food is, and most will say Mc Donald's. Music is also experiencing a burst of speed, as more and more artists are thrown onto the scene, most of them mass-produced, talent less, pretty-faced fools (Pop Idol etc). These 'artists' churn out low quality music at a frightfully fast rate. That's another thing, quality. As the speed of things increases, quality seems to fall. Everything seems to be losing its value. However, value is not the issue here. The issue is speed. I just don't think mankind is strong enough to live at such a fast pace. I fear we will all be enslaved by speed, or more to the point : corporations, for it is they who seem to be speeding things up.

What do you think?

well it seems to be an inevitability that business will destroy the value within the arts, i.e. music, film, books.

The appearance of things 'speeding up' seems to be a trend. In the western world we seem to be more and more fixated on getting 'necessities' immediately. Take away and coffee shops are a part of this broader trend.

p.s. great username btw

take british fast food (side splitting doctor quick) they don't exist a paramedic gets round the m25 faster than macdonalds can serve you warm food thats been sat there for ten minutes.

You obviously cannot answer my question, so I will answer yours.

It is possible to care for something which has no meaning.

It is possible to care for something that has no meaning.

If it is meaningless then is it the absurdity that you hang onto and create your belief system around?

I just cannot see where the connection could be with a world of no meaning, man by nature always seeks a meaning even if that meaning is meaningless/absurdity (existensialism which judging by your name you are informed of) thus man always places a meaning on his world and so cannot care for a meaningless world.

corny, but funny.

Yea, somehow people are hooked on fast-paced gimicks. I find it incredibly stupid. Marketing is all about flash. (the fast and the furious, for example).

I agree with the Camus' theory of absurdity.

The name gives it away.

Now that would be giving into the absurd.

I believe we should not give into the absurdity of the universe. I believe we should cherish life. I believe we should enjoy life, without preventing others from enjoying life. That's why I have started this thread. This issue concerns us all. We could be heading towards a very dystopian future. A world controlled by greedy corporations is a world without freedom, without happiness. A world without happiness is not worth living for. Only then would it seem logical to give into the absurdity of the universe, unless of course you enjoy misery.

You are assuming that I believe the universe is absurd.

I am not Schopenheaur, I do not praise the miserbale at all.

No I am not.

You, as in one.

Schopenhauer is the correct spelling by the way.

How insulting! I was merely helping your spelling! I'm glad that it has worked. Sorry about the edit business. I often rephrase things.

Lol sorry I taught you were being condescending something I am guilty of a lot.

I think we need to start a again!
