Virgin Atlantic cans lip-shaped urinals in U.S.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Virgin Atlantic Airways has scrapped plans to install bright-red urinals shaped like women's open lips at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport, saying it had received complaints they were offensive.

"Virgin Atlantic was very sorry to hear of people's concerns about the design of the 'Kisses' urinals to be fitted into our clubhouse at JFK Airport. We can assure everyone who complained to us that no offence was ever intended," Virgin spokesman John Riordan said in a statement on Friday.

Riordan said the company received several dozen complaints from people and groups including the National Organisation for Women after its plans for the urinals had been made public.

NOW had posted a message on its Web site urging members to complain to Virgin chief Richard Branson.

"I don't know many men who think it's cool to pee in a woman's mouth, even a porcelain one," said NOW President Kim Gandy on the group's Web site.

The urinal, designed by a Dutch company, was the idea of a female designer. Riordan said Virgin was surprised by the negative reaction to the plan, part of designs for the lounge, built to pamper first-class customers.

Had feminists not challenged the patriarchal system and taught womyn that they too are sexual beings and not just baby making machines, the sexual revolution may never have happened. Thats the thing-its a stereotype. A sexualized stereotype of womyn and their body parts. You need to understand that womyn are sexualized in two ways- by their actual sexuality and by their bodies. Womyns bodies are often disconnected from the actual woman in everyday life-ads, tv, art, etc. This is basically teaching society that womyn themselves are not sexual, but that their bodies are. We have sexualized womyns lips, breasts, legs, butt, etc. These are things that our society focuses on rather than on the complete woman. By having these stupid urinals, you are hinting at a certain type of sexuality (which there is nothing wrong with, as we are all sexual beings) and perpetuating the negative sexualized view of womyn.

Well, if need be, you could sign in to public bathrooms, and log when you went, and if someone went in there and found the bathroom a mess, they could look up who went before them and report you, and if you get reported enough times by different people, then you could face a large fine. Is it so outrageous to ask you to clean your mess if you piss on the seat? Even if you don't enforce it, just having a notice up that says you could face a fine if you are somehow caught making a mess in the bathroom and not cleaning it up, just the notice alone could get the message out to people to clean up the mess they made. I heard Singapore has such a policy.

I dont think it has anything to do with a pissing fetish either, so im not concerned with it at all. Whatever your fetish is im cool with that because its your thing. I cant tell anyone what to do in the bedroom because we all have certain things we do and enjoy.

Now, i do think that this has to do with sexualization like i mentioned in my post. I explained it clearly so im not going to go over it again.

And just because people are against this for that reason (the sexualization of womyns body parts) doesnt mean that they are too rigid or dont believe in sex or enjoy it- thats very far from what i really am, for example. We just see why this happening- the motives. Everything that people do in society is somehow motivated by something we have learned and the options that are available to us. So to me, by being the sociologist that i am, i see things differently. I look into what motivated these actions, and to me sexism did motivate these urinal ideas. Sex sells. They basically used sex to attract more customers- male customers. And to sell sex you have to play up the stereotypes (gender roles).

Unfortunately, for some people it is about vulgarity. People find stupid shit vulgar. I dont find it vulgar, i find it sexist. Today everything is taboo and vulgar but so desired.
