Victor and his classic rock. I know you're a huge classic rock fan (so am I), but don't you like some new bands that were formed after the '80s?
The bassists in Victor's poll are better than the other bassists who have been mentioned here, except Les Claypool.

yeah, it is a pretty narrow poll. But, there are very few bassists around today, especially in new bands, that i really like. bass in many songs today are just loud and pounding, or overly flashy. I like my basslines to be technicle, melodic, but not, overdone. In recent bassists, I really like Krist Novoselic, frm Nirvana, mainly because he plays bass so much like i do.
anyway, thanks for putting together the poll red! its better than any I would've done :P

I did consider Les Claypool from primus and Flea from the Chilli Peppers. I don't really like them, but the bassist, i must admit, is really good.
Tim Comerford is pretty good too, but I hardly considered him.

Yes, actualy I do.
I've recently discovered how awesome Pearl Jam is. They really rock. Queens of the Stone Age are prettyy cool. The Darkness is good. Jet is cool. The Smashing Pumpkins were pretty good. Ratm is alright. Much better than that whiny crap they call Audioslave.

The bassist from Queen. He was the supreme being among bass players.

Is that the bassist in Thin Lizzy, cani?
Yeah, he's good.
I wouldn't say he's better than the ones I listed, however.
And the bassist from Queen was John Deacon.
John Deacon was good.
Not better than the ons I listed, I think.
The only one I regret leaving out would be Claypool.

I think that he should have been on there. Even though Queen did music that doesn't fit the "normal" type of any rock music.

I love Queen, don't get me wrong, but Deacon is not among the top 9 base guitarists in my mind.

Yeah. He was the singer too. I don't really think he'd belong in this poll particularily, he wasn't necessarily the most talented bassist.
I just nominated him for his role in the band.
Well, it depends on what way you look at it I guess. He is one of the most important bass players, in that his creative contribution is so prevalant to the band, as most bands are led by the lead guitarist (stereotypically at least). However as a bass player, and bass player only he wouldn't be that important.
He said this once, which I think is an interesting take on being a minority:
"When I'm in England - I'm Irish, when I'm in Ireland, I'm from Dublin, when I'm in Dublin, I'm from Crumlin and when I'm in Crumlin - I'm black". Something along those lines at least.

I live up the road from Crumblin Cani and my parents are from there, they said everyone knew Philo because he was black.
Think about it , being black (he is more half-cast, white mother/black father) in a working class area in Dublin in the 60's/70's(I think). Now that is being a minority!
Thin Lizzy rock anyway, Phil Lynott and Gary Moore doing Parisienne Walkways together is the most inspiring thing I have ever seen on my quest for guitar lordyness.

At that time in Ireland, everyone would have stopped and stared at Phil. Black people were only seen on Trocaire boxes.
