India and Pakistan – sabre rattling
War is a useful distraction for rotten regimes that want to hang on to power. So it is in India with its war threats against Pakistan. Chanting: ‘we must oppose terrorism’ the Indian government has moved large numbers of troops to the border in readiness for war. A similar military threat blew up over Kashmir in 1999 and India’s right-wing BJP government won the elections after a loud, jingoistic, anti-Pakistan campaign.
Not that Pakistan has a clean skin. Its regime is fascist, pro-imperialist and warmongering. So why the sabre-rattling on India’s part?
According to the Indian monthly journal People’s March, there are close ties being developed between the US, Israel and India. ‘... It is quite clear that a US-Israel-India axis is slowly evolving. The BJP-led government plans to make India a total slave to these terrorist war-mongers. India will be used as the base for US military operations in the region, and Indian troops will be used as the foot soldiers to fulfil America’s geo-political interests. In return the US will endorse India’s expansionist ambitions in the region’. (People’s March January 2002).
The BJP is also facing elections in February in Uttar Pradesh state – the largest in the country, which it could lose. Should that happen it may well lose the nationwide elections due later on. Wars are useful things for whipping up nationalistic fervour and boosting election chances. The BJP is well aware of this.
