the other day i finally got to watch Amores Perros. I have been waiting forever to see this film and i finally found it here. The wait was very much worth it, as it was such a fabulous film.
I dont know really how to describe it because its sort of crazy. The film is divided up into three parts. Each part follows the story of different individuals. However, these three parts all intersect. They all come together because of a car crash between the lead character (Gael Garcia Bernal) and a spanish model (forgot her name), which is witnessed by a man who is an assassin. In each part, the movie shows what was taking place before and after the crash. It mainly deals with love, the loss of love, betrayal, and violence. I really dont know how else to describe it.
Has anybody else seen it?
If you havent i suggest you do- its really a fabulous film.

I did watch the film but it's translated in my local language. It was a good film nonetheless. It tackled a lot about what really is happening in the society. I really loved the film, especially with Gael playing a role there

I saw it a couple years ago before it went on video b/c my Mexican friend knew someone who knew someone in Mexico who brought a copy...some shit like that....
but yeah, its INSANELY good....it's really raw and real...just really makes you think, a fuckin trip. I liked it alot more than Y Tu Mama Tambien and El Crimen de Padre Amaro with the same actor...
BTW if you know some spanish, you might not understand it cuz its all Chilango or Mexican slang...I know spanish and i was reading the subtitles lmao

Those poor dogs though!
I love Chilango, chinga this, chinga that.. A very visceral film like much of the new Latin American cinema - City of God - Y tu mama - Nueve Reina's etc.. These are the best films being made, you guys should check for "Valentin" it's a new thing out of Buenos Aries, very different but a wonderful movie...
Octavio is an interesting character, maybe a symbol of all Mexican youth.. Trying by all means to escape the poverty he see's all around him, his relationship with his brother is sad, and the dogs... "Coffi"The fighting dog, the models cute little mutt which falls under the floorboards, the assasins dogs which follow him around, they are another link in an intricate story..
A wonderful, unforgetable film which has many levels..

I really love that movie. Its one of my all time favourites. I really like the way they talk too:D One of my best mexican friends didnt want to see it though because she has a dog and she told me that she couldnt bear seeing dogs killed in movies, pretty strange for me since she doesnt mind watching humans dying in movies ;)
Another great movie you should see if you can get hands on it is a movie from Mexico as well where they talk even more chilango than in Amores Perros... Its called Amarte Duele.. The soundtrack is pretty nice too. :D

The dogfights weren't real, by the way. If you liked that, you should check out 21 grams, the newest film by the same director. Benecio Del Toro won an Oscar for his performance in it, and Sean Penn and Naomi Watts were real good too. It was shot in the same crazy, rough, confusing style.

An absolutely wonderful film. I think every time i watch it, i find more layers to it.
On another note, a few weeks ago one of the anthropology professors here played a film in his weekely globalization series called La Cuidad (The City). the movie is set in New York city, and this movie has no professional actors in it, all of the people in it are actual mexican immigrants. it goes through 4 different stories, all of them making one want to cry. when the credits started, i think about 95% of the viewers were crying, including myself. after the film we always have a discussion, and a friend of mine that is studying here (the US, California to be exact) from Mexico City left directly afterwards because he said it was so powerful for him, he couldnt stay for the discussion. anyways, check it out if you can get a hold of it.
