View Full Version : Your Favourite Guitarist

I decided to make a Greatest Guitarist poll without the other option.
This way we can see which of the most highly acclaimed guitarists is most popular at Che-lives instead of ending up with 20% "other" votes, which nobody likes.

Of those listed Jimi, otherwise Dick Dale. I wouldn't even list Gilmour, or Morello there are others more deserving.

i guess Jimi Hendrix, due to the absence of Frusciante.

I really, really wanted to put Morello or Page, but Hendrix got me into playing music. Ler would also be a choice of mine. Let's make a poll for bassists (guess what I play?)

ohh I play bass too! I don't know enough bassists to put a poll together though...

I'll do one. :)
I tried one with drummer, but it sucked and everyone put other, so I never tried bassists.

Joey Santiago was/hopefully still is a brilliant guitar player.
But Jimi's the best.

Clapton was my vote....all the guitarists there are amazing musicians but Clapton, Santana, Morello, Beck and Hendrix are my fav. in that order from the list...simply because of their songwriting skills as well....which i admire more then just technical ability!

1. Jimi- Innovation and mad skillz. Bonus points for fashion sense.
2. B.B. King/Santana/Clapton/Page- This was tough, but they were all extremely good.
3. Tom Morello- Best modern guitarist

Do that again and you'll be banned from the music forum for life!
Not really, just thought I'd let you know that's why it didn't show up.
I also couldn't let you get away with ridiculing Geist like that.
One of my favourite guitarists is Earl "Chinna" Smith, an original member of the Aggrovators, Bunny Lee's studio band. Many a Chinna guitar lick can be heard echoing across the emptiness created by King Tubby.

By the way, have you heard of Black Uhuru?

Ban this piece of shit!
Yeah Black Uhuru are okay. I'm not a big fan of them, they sound a bit too "clean" for me. Something about the music, it isn't analogue enough. In general at least. I like their song, "I Love King Selassie". they've a few nice ones alright, the album Red, isn't too bad.
Lefty
20th March 2004, 07:01
That's cool. I found their cd whilst walking down the street a few days ago, and I thought of you, oddly enough. I was all like, "Obscure reggae? There's only one person to associate with this!" and thought of you. True story. Anyway, I have no clue what any of the song titles are, as it is simply a burned cd with "black uhuru" written on it in black marker. They seem pretty good, though. Anyway.

Jerry Cantrell(alice in chains)
kurt cobain
Troy van leueweeeeeethjktyktyu(that dude who went from apc to qotsa)

I would have voted Steve Vai, but I couldn't so it had to be Jeff Beck.
Personally I feel that Jimi Hendrix is an overrated guitar player.
I will probably get flamed for making such a statement. <_<
Lefty
20th March 2004, 22:40
There are other guitar players that have more "skills," that can probably play better parts (i.e. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, maybe Stevie Ray Vaughn, others) but Jimi Hendrix was incredibly influential and innovative. He was the first person to make music out of feedback and use "wah-wah" pedals (only he didn't actually have pedals) and make effects (only he had to actually make them by playing all crazy-like, he didn't have effects pedals or none o' that newfangled bool-sheeit.) That's why I put him at number 1, anyway.

Dan Hawkins
You must be kidding?
The dude released one fucking album and now he's better than Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Santana, and Jeff Beck?
C'mon!
Lefty, I agree that Clapton has more mad skillz than Hendrix.
Have you ever tried playing Layla?
That shit is impossible!
Hendrix, however, was more innovative.
And he had more great songs, whereas Clapton only had a handful of great songs and loads of pretty good ones.
I'm still not sure that I can say that Hendrix is a better songwritter than Clapton, though.
He is deffinitely my secong choice.
Either him of BB King.
I never thought I'd say taht BB King is under rated, but you guys aren't giving him the credit he deserves.
He is a fucking amazing guitarist!
And also extremely innovative. Far more so than Clapton.
Robert Johnson, anyone?
I seriously thought about putting him on there.
He wrote some fucking amazing shit, like Crossroads in 1936!
He was the single most innovatove guitarist taht I have ever heard.
And Gilmour did some kick-ass solos.
Not sure if he should be there, but he was also extremely talented.
Stevie Ray Vaughan I am not very familiar with, but I have heard some really impressive stuff from the man.
Jimmy Page is also talented extremely. Not as much as Hendrix, Clapton, or BB King, but talented nonetheless. Also very innovative. He did some shit taht was unheard of in his time as well. Listen to When the Levee Breaks with headphones on and there is some crazy shit going on that you'll hear in that song.
Tom Morello is talented but he needs to do some more demanding and better music, because Audioslave sucks massive ass.
Santana is also awesome. I'd probably put him up with Gilmour. Him, Gilmour, and May. All amazingly talented guitarists who pumped out some great riffs.
And I also think that T-Bone Walker deserves a mention for being probably among the most talented blues guitarists rivaling B.B. King. Should he have been on that poll?
And I also think that Eddie Van Halen also deserves a mention for being one rockin' mother fucker. The 80s almost didn't suck because of this man.
And finnaly, Eric Clapton, who I believe to be the most talented guitarist who performed and wrote some of the most harmonic, becautiful, and rockin' tunes.

Well.........as great as Hendrix was, I can't help but think that many people believe him to be 'the best' simply because "he is".
I know plenty of people who will claim that Hendrix is better than Steve Vai, without even hearing Steve Vai. Does this make sense?
What Lefty said about Hendrix making sounds without effects isn't strictly true. Hendrix was the first guitar player to widely use effects, some of the first wah pedals were built specifically for him.
Hendrix was undoubtedly innovative in many respects, though again, Steve Vai is equally innovative, with far less credit for being so.
I don't think that Hendrix is bad by any stretch of the imagination. But I always thought that he received too much credit for what he did.

Steve Vai belongs in a different category of "Technical" Guitar players. People like Stanley Jordan, who don't really have a band per se.

Link Wray?
I mentioned Dick Dale before.
Dr. Rosenpenis

Les Paul is good.
I think the ones I listed are better than any of those, however.
Steve Vai is really good as well.
Possibly better than a few of the ones I mentioned.
Not nearly as good as Hendrix, King, Page, Vaughan, or Clapton, though.

21st March 2004, 21:23
I personally feel that Vai is the best. Though I'm aware many people don't agree.
Whatever people say about Vai, it's unfair to simply call him a 'technical' player. Though his techincal ability is amazing his playing is very often slow and melodic. He's also incredibly original, his music is refreshingly different.
Players like Malmsteen on the other hand are technically good, but just plain rubbish.

i would take Vai over Clapton any day. I'm not overy impressed with Clapton's playing. It's very basic when you come right down to it. So far, there's not a clapton song/solo i haven't been able to figure out. but hendrix, man, i'm still struggling with little wing! I haven't tried to learn any vai though...but i did learn that thing that kid Eugene played inthe movie "cross roads" the thing Vai tried to play but couldn't. anyway, I sorta got off track, point is, I don't care much for clapton.
