This applies to anyone that has been called communist, it's just the USSR is the best example.
The principle arguements against communism is
Communism doesn't work.
But
USSR was communist.
If communism doesn't work then how can the USSR have been communist. Because if communism doesn't work then there can't be such thing as a communist state.
If communism does work, since communism is about communal ownership which means an equal share of power, as in democracy, then the USSR was either a democracy and communist or a dictatorship and not communist. Since the USSR wasn't a democracy, then it wasn't communist.
