America had good reason to support Saddam when it did.
Stopping the anti-American Islamic revolution in Iran from spreading throughout the Middle East was essential to America’s security interests. Joining the USSR, France, Germany and just about every other nation in the industrialised world in beefing up Iraq’s military was a logical means of achieving this goal.
However, when Saddam decided he was in the mood for a blitzkrieg across Arabia the USA decided he was a liability and took steps towards his elimination. Is this so difficult to comprehend?
Observe also that the USA and Britain are democracies. In democracies governments change, and when governments change policies change.

Had America not overthrown Iran's democratic government in the first place there would have been no "anti-American Islamic revolution".
Joining the USSR, France, Germany and just about every other nation in the industrialised world in beefing up Iraq’s military was a logical means of achieving this goal.
So encouraging a war that killed 2 million people was a legitimate action?

America should have stayed on Saddam's side, and worked with him to perhaps try and get those fundamentalists out of power...

Yeah, that way we could put our puppet dictator, the Shah, back in power. Iran needs their death squads back, not enough people are dying. Amnesty International claimed the US puppet dictatorship in Iran had the worst human rights record in the world, so why would you not what to put another one in power?
