***We're exhausted and forgot the link for the "Take Action" button. It's in this email now! Apologies for the double-email.***

The People are Mighty!

On Wednesday afternoon, Alderman Carlos Rosa (35th ward) and David Moore (17th ward) motioned for a defer and publish on the allocation of funds for the proposed cop academy, successfully postponing the vote until this Friday. Maldonado (26th) also asked that he be recorded as a "No" vote before it was deferred and published.

This is a MAJOR win because we now have three aldermen on the side of the people (and hopefully more!), all thanks to the persistent and brilliant leadership of young Black organizers of Assata's Daughters (https://wordpress.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3822a8a3f567f72547d6222d4&id=5770c5bfc5&e=d184ac114d), and with the efforts of over 70 organizations in Chicago. Rahm thought the cop academy would be a "quick done deal," but now he has to deal with us.

LATEST NEWS:

Our attorneys at Shiller*Preyar Law Offices (https://wordpress.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3822a8a3f567f72547d6222d4&id=97350a053e&e=d184ac114d), have filed for a temporary restraining order to stop Friday's cop academy vote from happening until the next scheduled City Council meeting in June, due to violations of the Open Meetings Act this week at City Hall.

The motion will be heard tomorrow (Friday) at 11:30am in room 2508 at Daley Center (50 W. Washington (https://maps.google.com/?q=50+W.+Washington&entry=gmail&source=g)). We NEED you to show up to pack the courtroom, and wear black. From there, we will then head over to City Hall (2nd floor) regardless of the decision, for a press conference at 1pm, and the City Council meeting at 2:15pm. Let's fill the chambers for the vote - if it happens. RSVP on Facebook (https://wordpress.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3822a8a3f567f72547d6222d4&id=6804196c46&e=d184ac114d).

We have an opportunity to stop the project from moving forward. Send a message to your Alderman right now (takes 2 minutes!) and ask them to commit to voting against Ordinance 02018-3823, which would allocate around $20 million to a Cop Academy plan which is expensive, harmful, and irresponsible.
