What does Brenton Wood sing again? I know I've heard him while listening to the oldies show on the radio every sunday evening. But really, most oldies suck (If my chola friend saw this, she would keek my ass!). But there are some good songs. They're only good cus I like the way they sing, but I hate love songs
If you love oldies you gotta listen to art laboe : http://www.killeroldies.com/ . Hey look my station's on there... "The I E's hottest music, 99.1 k-g-g-i" :D

Without the likes of Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Booker T. & the MG's, and Stevie Wonder I dunno who I would be today. But to cut to the chase, I love them and their music. And I don't necessarily think it's for hopeless romantics either, a lot of it has nothing to do with love and are just good songs.

Al Green has some excellent stuff. His new album is really good, as well. "Let's Stay Together" is pretty good all-around, and "Call Me." Ooh, so smooth. I don't really know what to listen to in soul, but this is some accomplished music.
Anyway, I've been going through a pretty big Marvin Gaye phase over the past few weeks for some reason. Now I'm branching out into Curtis Mayfield, so bear with me folks.

actually, I just remembered a topic I was going to start but didn't, because it would have been dumb.
The fact that "Can I get a Witness" and "Heard it through the Grapevine," both of which have been covered dozens of times, were on the same 45 is really amazing.

Doo-wops not too bad, there are some tight oldie songs too. Speaking of, did anybody hear the red hot chili pepper's rendition of "Teenager in Love"?(originally by the belmonts or something) This song is cool, sounds just as good as the original.

Hey there Superfly, Curtis is a funky dude it's pretty cool how such a bad movie can have such a great soundtrack done by one guy, and liek nowadays that would never happen most soundtracks today are oretty shitty. You have inspired me to pop in "Curtis" and "Roots" when I get home later.
Well played.

hey thanks, man.
I think one of the big reasons I like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, especially, is because when they sing about Politics, they are singing with a conviction to make things better that really speaks to me personally, you know?
No offense to RATM, TOOL, power tool, Anti-Flag, Capture the Flag, and all that (RATM does some good stuff when you're in the mood to hear it), but I like the idea of a song called "New World Order" really being emotional and not being forced down my throat.
I'm a huuuge fan of old soul and shit so I've got lotsa love for Marvin Gaye, Al Green, The Tempations, Wilson Pickett, Otis, etc.

I love the oldies like Otis Reding, The Temptations, The Platers, The Drifters, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles, and all of the ones that have already been mentioned.
I heard it Through the Grapevine is one of my favourite soul songs.
I also love the other stuff like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Franky Valley, the Lovin' Spoonfulls, etc.
I rarely listen to my local oldies staion anymore, though.

I agree. I think with Marvin especially, on a track like What's Goin On there's this urgency and feeling that something needs to be done before it tears us all apart and you can tell he's almost in tears at the end as he's trying to tell us what's happening. It probally also has something to due with the time period as well, I mean when Marvin says "Who really cares/to save the world in dispair" on Save The Children, in 71' it probally seemed like the world was going to end if nothing was done. It's amazing music to say the least.

Yeah, the whole album is filled with that same sense of urgency.
As for Otis Redding, VC, the only things I have heard were "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," which he happened to record at an awfully conveniant time, and his Monterey Set. I wasn't under the impression that he managed to produce that many albums, but I'll look into it.
The Lovin' Spoonfulls are dripping with cool, and owning "Pet Sounds" is still one of my biggest secrets music-wise. I listen to it every now and then.

Curtis and Marvin, what can I say? I dunno..
"Underground" What a tune, "We cannot live on the surface of our earth anymore" And even though I heard "Move on up" a thosand times it still makes the hair on my neck stand to attention, especially the extended conga overdrive version.. And "Tripping out".. ahh
Al Greens' new thing is cool, and though I'm not a man of God " Take me to the river" sends me all spiritual..
Rastafari, does your Marvin phase involve wearing floral dresses and living in a caravan on Brighton road?..
Wow, that pair went out in style too.. Curtis, on stage hit by a lighting rig and Marvin shot by his own deranged pop..

No way, man. I do that anyway.

I am sure that I'll die the same way Marvin did.
Otis' plane broke up over a lake. That sucks, too.
