US condemned for Afghan 'abuses'

The actions of US military and intelligence units in Afghanistan have been heavily criticised in a new report by an international human rights group.

US-based Human Rights Watch accuses US personnel of using excessive force, carrying out arbitrary detentions and mistreating people in custody.

Helicopter gunships have been used to fire on residential areas, when US troops were facing no opposition.

Once in custody in places like Bagram airbase north of Kabul, mistreatment is common, the human rights group says - detainees are frequently subjected to sleep deprivation, extremes of temperature and in some cases beatings.

The US military has absolved its forces of blame for an air raid that killed nine Afghan children last December.

"The investigating officer said we used appropriate rules of engagement and did follow the law of conflict," US military spokesman Bryan Hilferty said.

The UN had wanted the US military report to be made public.

But Lieutenant-Colonel Hilferty said the inquiry's findings would remain "top secret" - despite the UN calls.

There is a book out, called "Gas War: The Truth Behind the American Occupation of Afghanistan" which I haven't been able to find here and also a Documentary called "Afghan Massacre: The Convoy of Death," made by a former BBC director, where US Special forces supervised the murder of 3,000 POW's

Here (http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=40&ItemID=4230) is an article by John Pilger about it, as well , where he cites an investigation that "up to 8,000 Afghans killed by American bombs, as many as 20,000 more may have died as an indirect consequence of Bush's invasion, including those who fled their homes and were denied emergency relief in the middle of a drought".

This story will most likely die in a few days and the old "It's a war, what do you expect?" excuse will be enough to cover it. I doubt there was an investigation at all, that's why it will remain top secret. I am just wondering has the US military ever admitted one of it's troops has done something wrong, ever ?

Along with all the killings of civilians, I've also read that as many as 1.5 million have been displaced and are now of refuge status. Many are starving to death trying to escape.

Even the UN considers it a human rights disaster.

As you can see, Afganistan is not mentioed any where now, but I think it needs about 100 to 150 years to build to build up, first they will try to fight with Americans as much as they can, and their real losts will be seen in 10 years when they faced with problems and problems..
