Thousands of auto assemblers at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi factory, are coming together to create a better workplace. By joining together in union, they hope to end unreasonable production quotas, stop unsafe working conditions, and earn a fair return on their work at Nissan.

After an intense anti-union campaign of threats, intimidation and misinformation, IndustriALL Global Union affiliate the UAW has lost an election to form a union at Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi, USA, by a 2,244 votes to 1,307.

Nissan workers are in a cutthroat fight for unionization in the area of the South with the lowest rates of unionization. 3,500 workers will be voting on Friday and Saturday on whether to join the United Autombile Workers. The New York Times reports that 'Union supporters complain that the company has been stingy with benefits and bonuses.'

Nissan workers in Canton, Mississippi, voted against unionizing on Friday by a margin of 2,244 to 1,307. The vote was a disappointing defeat for those who hoped to open the door for union organizing across the American south.
